An earthquake rocked the southern coast of Mexico late on Thursday, shaking and swaying buildings to the point of triggering tsunami warnings.

The US Geological Survey said the quake measured 8.2 degrees and occurred at 11:49 pm local time, centered 102 miles west of Tapa Chula in the southern state of Chia Pass, near Guatemala. It had a depth of 22 miles.
The Mexican Civil Protection Agency said the quake was the largest in Mexico City in 1985 and claimed thousands of lives.
Tsunami warning system indicated that the tsunami was dangerous The tsunami could hit the Pacific coasts of several Central American countries, including Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama and Honduras, within three hours.
