After decades of civil wars, Phnom Penh now appears to be an absolute better look with many interesting and attractive places. Among them, the independence monument area attracts me most due to its fantastic view, history, and the lively and relaxing atmosphere there. Basically, I like the monument due to its structure and its meaning. It always makes me feel the mixture of bitterness and joy. Truly, it reminds me of the cheers of victory; at the same time I hardly could avoid not to think of the harsh strikes, pain, and sacrifice that the past generation had been through.

Independence Monument Now
The monument was built in 1958 mainly for the commemoration after the independence from France in 1953. It was designed by a famous architecture, Vann Molyvann.
On the Independence Day, the ceremonial flame is lit at the pedestal in the center of the monument. With shops, parks and so other structure, this area has become a very busy place especially at the evening and night time. Under the cool and refreshing river breeze, crowds of people gather at the parks on the east site of the monument for their sports activities or chatting. They also enjoy sightseeing and taking photographs. Definitely, it is fascinating place for both local people and foreigners.
