Didn't know you were a comics fan, or is it just the movies?
Well, I agree with what you say about they cutting too much. They cut the scene with all the foreshadowing the same exact way the cut Tony Stark's heavy alcoholism problem and his inner Demons, making him their inhouse baddass anti-hero with no background noise or psychological baggage you can see in the books.
All in all, this is all due to the comics and the movies having very different audiences. They try to cater to children and their mothers instead of the grown ups (the children of the golden comics time) and hence streamline the movies, dumbing them down and pushing the audience they would supposedly be meant for out of the theaters... but they get more box office money this way so... what should we expect.

I think you nailed it completely, maybe they cater to other audiences. As you said moms and kids maybe.
It's definitely seems like they cut on depth.
