Places to visit in India #2 The haunted Bhangarh Fort in Rajasthan, India

in #blog7 years ago (edited)

The Bhangarh Fort is famous or rather infamous as among the most haunted places in India. The fort lies in the Alwar district on the outskirts of Sariska Tiger Reserve. Rajasthan has arguably the most scatterings of forts and palaces in India in a single state. The state is well known for its rich heritage due to its numerous forts and palaces. The fort is currently under the protection of Archaeological Survey of India and is maintained by them.

Why is it haunted?

While there 2-3 versions of haunting background to the fort, the one that was narrated to me and my friends during our visit was based on the legend about a Tanktrik (Wizard) falling in love with the princess who lived in the fort. In order to win over the princess the Tantrik used his prowess of black magic to concoct a potion which would have enabled him to win the princess’s heart. However the Princess and her companion saw through the sorcery and instead they threw the potion on a rock. Legend says the rock later flew back to the Tantrik’s place and crushed him. However, before he died he threw a curse on the princess and the entire fort to remain cursed forever. That’s how the story went according to my guide.

Is it truly haunted?

There have been multiple horror stories about people losing their lives around the fort and quite a few of them have been attributed to the haunted background. But is it truly haunted? My suggestion is that you travel and find out yourselves. You will not be disappointed due to the beautiful ruins that you will witness and the compelling backstory to keep you mesmerised during your visit.

How to reach there and best time to visit

Assuming that your starting point is Delhi, I would suggest you take your car or a rental depending on your comfort. The fort can be easily located using Google Maps . You will have to drive around 240 kms from Delhi via Alwar route. The roads post the Alwar bypass can be difficult due to the numerous potholes. The best time to travel is during November to March when it is slightly colder as it tends to get hot around there even during the winters.
