Believe it or not, there is a monument dedicated to laboratory rats, it was made in bronze and it is located in a square near the Academic Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk. Professor Nikolai Kolchanov commented that this monument symbolizes gratitude towards the animal that humanity has used to study genetics, the molecular and physical mechanisms of diseases, as well as the development of new drugs.

The laboratory mouse is a rodent, usually of the Mus musculus species, whose karyotype is composed of 40 chromosomes and are usually albino. For each experiment, laboratory mice belonging to the same strain are chosen, which have identical genes, which allows the comparison of the effects of the different experimental treatments, without confution due to genetic differences.
