So I've been living in the UAE for about a year now and am always asked by people back home questions about life here.
- Do you have to wear a burqa and be completely covered?
NO. This is the most common question I get when people find out that I live here. The dress code is quite simple here actually. When going out in public places it is highly recommended that you maintain some modesty being shoulders down to knees covered. This doesn't phase me that much being that I prefer to dress more modest and I'm certainly not one to go around flashing my HOOHAA everywhere. I have personally seen others being told off for being dressed inappropriately; example, a girl was in the grocery store with her husband wearing nothing but a oversized t-shirt. It may have been a dress, but honestly, if she had a least a pair of shorts on with it, she would not have been embarrassed and probably wouldn't have even been approached.
Workwise I tend to always wear a sleeve simply because it's air-conditioned and can get cold, despite the heat outside.
- Are you allowed to work?
Absolutely. Even though I was on a spousal visa I was still allowed to apply for work, under the condition that I provide an NOC (No Objection Certificate) from my husband.

- Are you allowed to drive?
Again, yes. As long as you have a driving licence from your country of origin you can apply for a driving licence in the UAE. Depending on which country you originate from will depend on how easy it is for you to drive. For example, most of the European countries, Australia, United Kingdom and the USA it is as simple as walking in and transferring. Some European countries will need to go through a little bit more because of the language structure and some countries will need to go through the process of driving lessons and tests before they can obtain.
- Can you drink alcohol?
Yes - but be a an adult about it. You can apply for an alcohol licence to purchase alcohol from liquor stores to consume at home. Also, there is a massive nightlife here and Friday brunches where people drink. It's important to remember that you cannot leave the venue while still drinking and cannot be under the influence in public. Venues are quick and helpful to see that you get home safely.
