5 reasons you should buy used music instruments (even if you are not a musician)

in #blog7 years ago (edited)

As you may know, i have been buying used guitars lately thanks to steemit (yeah /m/ ), not only because i am a musician, but also because i have learned over the years the value and advantage of used gear, so here i bring to you a list of reasons to buy used instruments instead of new if you are a musician, and also some reasons for none musical related people:

1 Used instruments retain value over time: When you buy a brand new guitar in the store, right in the moment to take it out of the shop it becomes used and it losses 40% of it value. If you want to sell your guitar one week later or one month later, no one is going to give you the same amount of money you paid in the store, they can easily go to the shop themselves and pick a new one, so if you where in the need of selling your brand new guitar, you probably end up losing some serious bucks.

Lets put for a example a Fender Strat, it can cost you 900$ new in the guitar shop, but you can find one used in very good condition for around 500$ (or less if you get lucky or search enough). You can later sell the same used guitar for the same 500$ or even more if you are a good dealer, also the guitar could become a classic and sell for thousands, you never know!...

2 You are helping a fellow musician in need: Yes, it is also about community, musicians can sometimes have a very hard time economically, and many times they need to sell their stuff just to pay rent or buy food, or simply paying the studio time to record their next hit!, in any case, when you buy a used instrument, you are helping and supporting a fellow musician!

3 Used instruments are a very good money investment: Even if you are not a musician, and you are looking for something to invest your money instead of having it in the bank, a good used instrument is a very good way to invest and protect your money, for reason number 1 above, and also its not like buying a tv, or a computer that it will get outdated in the next few years, music instruments pretty much never get outdated, actually some people pay more money for an instrument that looks used, this is knows as "relic".

4 Used instruments are cheaper: This is obvious, but not less important, you can find very good deals (i mean very very good deals) in used instruments, that would cost you a lot new. I have some real life examples, recently i bought a Schecter Damien 6 guitar for just 50$, this new cost around 350$ if you find a good offer. Musicians use to need several instruments (not just because they like it), for many reasons, if you are a guitar player, you need a guitar, an amplifier, pedals, cables, strings, different types of guitars for different situations etc, being a musician can be a very expensive profession, getting all the needed gear new may be very hard sometimes, so finding good deals is the way to go and help you grow as a musician.

5 Getting an used instrument is an opportunity to discover a gem: Once i bought this really cheap Fender Squier made in Korea, soon i found out it was special because it was from the first series made there in 1987, this raised its praise and it value considerably , previous owner did not know this, unfortunately i had to sell it later because i needed the money, but i do earned a good amount out of it (i sold it x2 the price i bought it), so you never know when you are come across with some gem in the used market!, many people just don't know what they have... A friend of mine once bought a Fender strat worth of 20k$ for only 300$, the owner just thought it was an outdated old fashioned guitar his grandfather use to play.

So, you ever bought an used instrument? i would love to hear your history :D

This really hits home. I've purchased many instruments, and i've only bought two new as far as I can recall ( inexpensive intermediate guitar/ukulele I can lug around without dragging the good stuff to outdoor events). I love buying used, that broke in feel, value like you stated, and I just like the idea of repurposing instead if buying brand new (plus modding is relatively guilt free). My favourite guitar is a DeArmond that isn't made anymore that I traded to a good friend for a piece of gear he needed, can't buy it be in a store anymore. Sorry for the paragraph, just really dig this read, cheers!

Thats cool man!, i love to hear gear talks!... you are welcome to show your gear in photos, just make a post about it :D

Like in this post? Apologies, I'm still getting used to the platform lol. If you want to follow I plan to make some posts on the gear on my page, and I might have some other content you'd enjoy.

My first electric guitar was 2nd hand. It had a few issues, but it got me started. My next was new. I knew what I wanted and it might have taken a long time to find a 2nd hand one. With things like a guitar you can fairly easily tell if there is something wrong with it, but you are limited by what is available. You can take the risk of buying without seeing the item first if the seller is not in your area. You need to be really lucky to get something that's worth a lot more than the selling price. I think people are more likely to check what they have these days. That said, you seem to have done well.

Ha ha yea, like I need you to give me the ok to go buy more guitars! lol. Great read brother!

LOL, just go and buy one! :D

Ok ok I'm on it!!

The genesis. nice post.

i love music...

Music is life!

Upvoted+resteemed+followed.. do the same to my posts..

thanks! :D

A bought a string guitar long ago when I was 14, always wanted to learn how to play it but never learned . Great pictures , keep doing you (:

Thanks!, its never late to learn!, give it a try! :D

I own a 5 string bass, 4 string bass, electric guitar, and electric drum set. I have bought these all brand new, but don't have a problem with buying them used.

congrats! owning instruments is always great! :D

Ive bought, sold, and traded tons of instruments over the years. Guitars, drums, basses, and i currently have a fiddle that sounds like a dying cat when i try to play it. This comes from being a musician for almost 30 yrs. Since im still playing im drawn to anywhere that has instruments for sale. I cant always buy, but i can make mental shopping list. I agree that used instruments are a good investment, even for a non musician.

yep that's right!... I agree with the mental shopping list lol, we always do that! :D

Sometimes it really seems that why should we use old instruments, newer ones seem to be better and easier to take care of. I really like the fact that every instrument has it's own story and history.
Thanks for sharing @dreamrafa
PS! My very first guitar was my mothers old one and it wasn't the best, but the story behind that guitar was an inspiration to me to not give up after trying and failing. Now have been playing guitar for 9 years.

Thats cool man!, yes instruments have history!

Never saw this way... Maybe its time to start reading about instruments, never know what or when could appear a good bussines, bans who knows, maybe I could start learning to play something!

Thanks for sharing my friend... Upvoted!!!

So agree! 👍🏽

Hello @dreamrafa ! Personally, I love used instruments because I can do little experiments with them and try to create new timbers ! I love to modify acoustic instruments. Any change in the shape of the instrument change its tone ! When I get cheap instrument I try to create new ones :p

Good read man! Saw your post on the fb group.
I'm excited at the prospect idea of selling/trading in a community like this as reward for content/shares😍

Thank my friend!, this platform have many potential for many things!

Hello Pedro here from Uruguay.
Man you know what! I just made an exchange of instruments and i feel like i got a good deal (maybe not but im happy).
I used Mercadolibre in Uruguay (similar to Amazon) and just yesterday i exchanged my non used AKAI APC40 for a Roland A500-PRO. Both midi controllers, but with differences. However the Roland has a better background the MIDI integration with FTP technology.
With the AKAI i was stuck to use it with Ableton; this new Roland controller and keyboard gives me freedom to choose any DAW and i feel damn happy!
Where do you get your stuff? i love music instruments :)

I only buy used guitar gear for all your listed reasons, well done mate! I'm still waiting for my old Gibson/Fender treasure estate sale find, however.
