RE: BlockTrades RocksDB proposal to Steemit

I’d also note that these RAM levels correspond to motherboard & chipset limits in the real world.

  • 64Gb is the RAM limit for a regular desktop computer (eg LGA1151 socket);
  • 128Gb is limit for High End Desktop (HEDT) like Intel Skylake X CPUs.

Beyond 128Gb RAM you have to use server motherboards and components which are often much more expensive for small performance improvements.

For true decentralization we need to be in the situation where witnesses can run on regular desktops with 64Gb and full RPC nodes on HEDTs with 128Gb.

Preferably on people’s own hardware as use of cloud services undermines decentralization and creates ongoing operational expenses that can be problematic in times of low Steem prices.

Purchased equipment means you can ride out the tough times. It also proves your commitment.

Youre right, the main problem is not beeing able to run a node on a "more regular" machine, as this contributes to more centralization!

Hell, if I could run a node out of my basement on a decent desktop, I would. Just saying.

Same here, or even on a cheap aws server!
