"What happens if they shut down the internet?" - Actually that will happen for a bit (government save us! lol) and has already been happening. The FCC for example has a kill-switch at every ISP in Amerika now, including the ability to shut off specific macid's/demarcs. I can only assume that most governments around the planet all have that level of control now.
Their government cryptos won't work too well without it though, so luckily for them it will only be temporary. They'll of course use their "cyber-pandemic", those "evil hackers", the "Cyber Polygon" event or some other reason for the shut down though, maybe even their fake alien invasion, who knows.
Point is, there is no point in trying to fight them when we can literally render them obsolete right NOW by using openwrt routers (like tp-link or linksys (https://openwrt.org/toh/recommended_routers)) and decent antennas. We have even reached the point now where we can 3D print just about anything and with FOSS hardware, we can produce all of the transceiving equipment we will ever need. Oh, and don't forget to power it all with a little solar panel, inverter, battery and mppt charge controller.
With enough of us using mesh, we could even persuade bankrupt ISP's to bridge in with us so that long distance (such as submerged fiber) communications can be as fast as it is now. They won't be able to control the last-mile anymore.
If the ISP does not allow encrypted traffic on it, or blacklists your macid's due to your masked usage, then buy your new openwrt router NOW before it's too late and help your neighbors to do the same.
Don't fight the ISP's, just leave.
In addition, I would also like to see node sysadmins adopt use of .eth and .onion domains so that my crypto wallet doesn't need to connect to a node that uses an old ICANN address. Maybe even connect to nodes using alt-protocols too such as activitypub/matrix and ipfs.
API and History nodes should be using distributed chain db's too such as orbitdb, redis, prisma, etc. We're there, but Sysadmins and Devs need to be made aware of the urgency. Get on it guys, PLEASE :)
Not that I'm paranoid, but it certainly doesn't hurt to be prepared, and get at least the basics setup now. Those badass mesh routers are typically under $200 too, so why wait?
you could find a sola power provider to partner with who fund the devices because they will go out with their solar panels.
