The Hague Institute for Innovating of Law (HiiL) Kampala Challenge

The HiiL innovation forums aim at supporting start ups or organizations driven towards innovations that address justice problems in many developing countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and Latin America.

I did attend the HiiL Kampala Challenge where i made a presentation on registration of Land titles on the Blockchain for many of Ugandans that own land but do not have titles to that land.

Over 99% of Ugandan land owners do not have titles for the land they live on or farm meaning they can't access any credit using the Land they own as they do not have any document to show for it.

Land in Uganda is owned under the following tenure systems namely;

Free Hold, Mailo land, Lease, Public Land and Customary Land.

Title holders are mostly under the categories of Free Hold, Mailo Land & Lease Hold and these are 1% or less. Most of the land owners own it customary and are over 99% which makes the case of finding a way of having this huge percentage register their land and benefit from it economically.

I thought the Blockchain being decentralized, immutable, tamper proof would be the best idea to have this problem addressed especially in developing countries after seeing a few countries starting to embrace it the same way.
