When was the last time you blinked consciously? The probable answer is, I don’t remember when I nictated the last time. Take a moment and wink your eyes. It won’t take more than a second.
On an average we blink 15-20 times per minute and around 1100 times per hour. We lose some of the visual information because of our flick. Why do we nictate? Give it a thought.
When we flick our eyes, some of the protein rich, moistures cover our eyes and they clean the dirt on our eyes. They also replace the existing tears with the fresh ones. They sharpen our vision, brightening the image our retina receives. If you still haven’t blinked, try it once.
In digital world, we spend most of the time with the digital screen, even you are reading the write up on the mobile. Our eyes become more focused on the monitor and our average blinking rate decreases. On googling, I found the reason that the screen needs more concentration and as a result the rate decreases. In case you are unable to relate how our focus decreases the rate, you can pore on the second line of second para.
When we spend too much time with screen, our eyes get dry and develop strains too. As professionals, we tend to spend most of the time in front of screen. You must be thinking by now, what steps should we take to increase blink? We can remind ourselves to flick frequently. We can write that on our desk. We can set mobile reminders initially to get into the habit. We should also practice closing our eyes, while doing the tasks which don’t require vision. We can flutter our eyes in each direction for at least 10 times in the morning.
Hope, I can draw your precious attention on your beautiful eyes ;)
