I personally think Coinbase is great, so good call there. You already made a great choice by joining Steemit wherein you can participate in a growing community and earn a popular cyptocurrency while doing it. If you want to trade some other altcoins, I recommend Bittrex.

Yes, I am familiar with the forex market. My take on it is it has all the intricacies of trading cryptos but with the downside that it is all government backed fiat currency - a big downside from my perspective. Is it something you are into? Trading national currencies?
Gotta have an arsenal. I'd suggest Poloniex, Bittrex, Bitfinex exchanges.
TabTrader app, especially on Android, is groovy. Enable your API Keys of your exchange accounts and input them into TabTrader, and you're able to place orders and watch charts from all your exchanges within one app.
