A lot of people worked on bitcoin as a hobby but they were priced so less, that people felt that it is worthless, so they stopped looking into it or totally forgot about it. A lot of them had their keys saved on hard disks and unfortunately, those were thrown away or the storage locations were forgotten. Those people have kinda even gone into depression after learning the current price.
Currently 4million coins are assumed to be lost due to loss of keys or coins sent to the wrong addresses or the wrong chain,etc.
