It is an industry that is very young. I agree the technology underneath is what matters. It could be in a hype cycle but I dont think so. Sure there are a lot of crypto that are garbage. However, the technology is moving forward and more development is taking place.
What is also different is these blockchains are decentralized. Therefore, anyone can build on them...and there are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people doing that. This is the golden nugget. It is an industry that is not dependent upon the strategy or navigation of corporations.
Just like STEEM, it is already taking on a life of its own. There is enough development on this blockchain by independent people that will make it excel. I believe we are seeing this on other blockchains.
The article is right, we do need to see some of the garbage cleared out.
