The future city will be like an organism; a microcosm of people, urban infrastructure and devices. The role of IoT in urban infrastructure will be revolutionary, to monitor the vital signs of the city, such as numbers(people and vehicles), transportation, environmental quality etc
The confluence of the major technological trends today leads to a cypherpunk future. Artificial intelligence augmenting automated tasks, blockchain restoring trustless value transfer, the increasing role of devices at both a personal level and on the macro level, advancements in robotics and the interconnectedness of devices will form the technological fabric of the not-so-distant future. The place for IoT (Internet of Things) on the urban scale leads to a future with smart cities. The urban infrastructure of the future will not only involve the functional components such as transport and utilities; technology, specifically, smart hardware will form a crucial cog that will upgrade the functionality of the city, in light of its increasing complexity.
MXC Protocol
MXC Protocol is a German project whose goal is to realize the data sharing of smart city data. MXP Protocol has innovated a new protocol for device-to-device communication. The main pillars of MXC Protocol are LPWAN (Low Power Wide Access Network) technology and the Machine Exchange Protocol(MXProtocol).
Through data tagging and geo tagging features, information about the operations in cities can be conveniently collected shared across the network through community nodes (sensors and connected devices).
To appreciate the innovation of MXC technology, we have to look into the backstory of data transmission. Having used smartphones today, you have heard or seen 4G and LTE being the most prominent inbuilt transmission protocols in these devices. The limitations with the two are high transmission costs, and high battery usage, congestion during peak hours etc.
In addition, retail users need to pay some subscription fees to access the services of some network frequencies. The MXC Foundation is a non-profit venture, as such individuals/companies can set up LORAWAN gateways without monthly charges.
LPWAN technology
LPWAN technology improves on the inherent limitations of current data network protocols such as Bluetooth and 3G/4G such as limited coverage and high battery usage. LPWAN Gateway is the MXC equivalent of the Wi-Fi router, that creates wireless network access. The LPWAN Gateway opens devices to access the LPWAN network.
Comparison between LPWAN and other technologies
The competitive edge offered by LPWAN technology:
✅10-year sensor battery life
✅20km data reach with a single gateway
✅Offers an extreme amount of connection points (over 60, 000 for a single network cell) supported by LPWAN gateways at an extremely low cost
Payment and data flow of MXProtocol
Each sensor has an MXC wallet embedded. The wallet facilitates paying for network services as well as receiving reward for providing data to the network. The wallet is stored in the cloud to reduce the power usage of the LPWAN setup.
The decentralized LPWAN can be built on top of any permissionless blockchain
Smart bidding
The eventual goal of the smart bid is to have a protocol for assigning network resources to the highest bidder.
Anti – Collision Measures
Network congestion will strain network resources. The Anti-Collision Coordinator is MXC’s solution to combat collision on the LPWAN network and ensure the communication between devices occurs without any hitches. As the name suggests, the Anti-Collision Coordinator ensures that a particular frequency can only be used by one instance of data at one time.
Out of range assets can also be reassigned to new sensors in new geographical locations to ensure the uplink is still retained.
Inter-chain data market
The MXP protocol is designed to encourage both individuals and companies to participate in a sharing economy of real-time data trading. To date, MXC has already penned partnerships in over 40 countries around the globe.
This data can be shared across different permissionless blockchain to realize even more value for it.

APPLICATIONS OF MXC TECHNOLOGY
By 2030 there will be more than 100 billion devices around the world, these can very easily form a good network of obtaining and transmitting data. The fact that these devices cover multiple jurisdictions create the need for a cryptocurrency to overcome problems such as international payments, multiple currencies etc. The Machine Exchange Coin is the fuel that runs the MXC Protocol.
MXC sensors can be used to provide valuable data such as:
• Streetlights can be used as sensors for traffic data (vehicular, pedestrian) etc. an used to establish patterns.
• They can switch on and off at when traffic walks by, and light is turning down,
• Inform on vacant parking lots to reduce time looking for one,
• people using electric vehicles can easily find charging stations,
• garbage collection companies can be able to know the waste level without having to monitor the litter bins themselves,
• water and sewage leaks can be quickly noted by weather sensors before damage is done.
• Automatic watering systems can be operated easily to maintain public parks
• Air/Noise pollution can be quickly detected and preventory measures taken
• Floods can be prevented by monitoring water levels
• Electricity and water consumption figures can be noted and transmitted automatically
• Car accident/fire accident alerts can be quicker,
• Disaster prevention measures can be activated in the case of emergencies
• Unused resources in areas with low numbers can be switched off saving power
However, shifting city operations from human-based to machine-based comes with its fair share of complications. Unintended consequences of machine managed operations call for the need of a careful and meticulous approach. This echoes the slow and meticulous process of adopting new technology; this first step will go a long way.
