There are plenty exchanges and some people chose small ones over big ones due to ie their local currency or good arbitrage options. Today a guy (or a bot) did huge fail due to panic.
Due to small volume and some API this caused flash crash to 1k AUD which went back fast to 10k AUD back.
On such market conditions those situations may happen more and more. Expect also exchanges starting to go down.

I disagree... I think this is just API error. Selling at $999 means the entire sell order from current price to $999 has to be filled. Which did not happen.
No one sold at $999 and no one bought at this price.
Or somebody just tried to simulate the huge price drop. On some exchanges you can sell/buy 0.0001 and it will appear on a chart.
I agree with you. How can one sell for 999. The order will not get filled. However and wherever that happened, its hard to believe. But thanks forletting us know.
maybe its API issue maybe a flashcrash both happen sometimes and ive bought cheap coins many times on flash crashes. i dont use this AU exchange though
Wouldn't it be possible that the person/bot didn't actually instantly sell at $999? Instead, created a sell offer at $999?
I also agree it is API error. It is not the first time that this happened, so I can say that this is some:
so the headline is fake and just click bait.. hmmmm
@kingscrows I can not believe that could be really possible. Only I can not.
Thanks for bring this post. I voted you.
Wow thats bad, selling precious bitcoins is not smart anyway, but for that price.........
HODL!!!
Maybe he thought the price of a bitcoin was the one from a year ago. Who knows?
I bought some SUB for 0.013 BTC once instead of 0.0013BTC :(
realmente necesitamos mucha educación financiera y de comercio, ya que muchos solo pinzan en cambiar dinero fácil sin tomar en cuenta sus propias y necesarias inversiones. bueno todo un giro a nuestro favor.
I would have a heart attack if I made this mistake!
Ouch!! That’s got to hurt. Unless he was trying to cause a flash crash! In which case ouch!!
It is giving away...
Hoping it is me!
WTF???
Wow this is funny and sad, the buyer is super lucky.
One person messed up and another ended up doing really good so I guess it sort of even outs, you gotta know what you're doing in this space or else you'll lose your pants !
But, what was the quantity?
And indeed, poor guy.

Shit happens to some and others get lucky
