Having coins in your own wallet not keeping them in exchange forever is as important as making backups of all private keys.
Lately, i wrote that my HDD fucked up and i will need to replace it - https://steemit.com/bitcoin/@kingscrown/while-moving-backup-of-old-hdd-found-loads-of-oldschool-wallets
If you host many wallets ie to do Proof of Stake its also worth to just clone drive with all of the blockchains (that may take weeks or months to sync). Sure you wont lose coins if you have priv keys but syncing 3465346 wallets may not be fun. Do the clones from time to time and here is how to do it.
There are many ways to do it but i will tell you how i go for this for internal drives, you can tweak this in any way you need.
- Get HDD, in my case Seagate Barracuda and USD to SATA/IDE cables
- Download freeware from https://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html
Now this is easy. Connect the HDD to Computer, choose drive, click copy and paste it into clear drive. It will do a 1:1 clone.
Now the computer will restart in dos mode and do its job. I suggest leaving this overnight since it takes time to copy 1TB of data.
Done
Now if your HDD dies, you just put the clone, and computer uses it the same way it was. No need to install anything, change permissions - its the same HDD for the computer. I suggest this clone-backups done from time to time ie every few months.

Keeping it all safe is the biggest challenge we face in crypto today. Thanks for the info good tip.
Also make sure that you keep your backups safe.
There are two risks associated with backups:
(don't keep it in same location, think about your house/office burning to the ground)
(it need to be secured at least at the same level as your original data)
Be safe, steem on!
Good advice
Also while your at it backup any 2 factor authentication codes!
Thank you! and I will do :)
the main thing is not to disclose them in SteemChat chat when they ask for the password by fraud: (
You need to know that not one whale will ever ask you for keys
I will place it on my page so that my friends - followers know about it !!!
(thanks again)
This is indeed helpful as files cant be lost again @kingscrown
but nobody need all the files on harddisk...
maybe it will be better to safe just some special
excellent post
By only changing the HDD , dont i need to install anything new ...this is cool..
It's better safe than sorry. This is such a basic thing which most just ignore.
I have written the keys down on a paper, and also placed them on a memory stick inside a crypted file. I feel pretty safe for the 200$ that I hold in crypto now :))
Very good

I back up all my private keys in a drive and in an encrypted drive called geens.com. my question is is it safe to trust those services for my private keys?
If you encrypt them, they can be stored anywhere.
Just don't put them in a document called privatekeys.zip
If someone knows that they are the private keys, then they can run a kracker on it for however long.
So, if you have a well encrypted file with your private keys, it will be hard for anyone to break, but better is to not even have them trying.
The most unsafe place to have them is in the wallet directory. Because that is where anyone who breaks into your computer will go looking first.
There is so much money locked in wallets on broken computers
