Interesting facts from an aging miner about reaching one petahash SHA style

in #bitcoin8 years ago

Hello and good day!
Good luck to everyone at the Olympics wherever you call home.

I was just looking at my noob hash rate on some of the pools and had to look back in history for fun, most people look at pictures of their children, grand-kids, family and friends, I prefer the art of the blockchain I guess.

it is a truly dynamic piece of genius existing, growing, and transforming in many ways, and I foresee a better world in the coming years from it.

I digress.

Near this date of writing in 2013, when few coins where around, the entire network hashing rate on bitcoin surpassed one petahash. I was just learning about the "new" bitcoin and started burning out my galaxy s3 mining it. This was tequila shooting, head banging the wall, craziness! one petahash!
One million gigahash equals one petahash. The entire world broke through together and achieved this.

Way back(but not all that long ago) in the black and white non touch screen days we had rabbit ears to get a channel or two on tv, and back in the day we measured hashing speed in GH not Terra. These days I see 4 year olds kicking my ass on Pokemon Go! and learning to code in grade 4 while I was lucky to discover an Apple IIe and write text based adventure games in BasicA on old Vector's while my dream gaming system was an Amiga computer. We harness so much power these days and take it for granted sometimes, so good to live in these great times.

One million gigahash equals one petahash. The entire world broke through together and achieved this jsut a few years ago.

Today, it's still a lot of hash power but it's within reach to solo it.
It would take around 80-85 antminer s9's to hit one petahash with the new chips, then I guess we will be seeing exahashing. This seems like a lot but if you are an old geezer without a wife or kids and can recycle your empty beer cans it is possible!

Cheers to all of you and let's make the world a better place. I won't name any other coins on here but I do think bitcoin has to mentioned as the grandaddy of it all and I do like steem.

Rock on and make some memories, tell me if my math is way off (it might be, I've been drinking) and let's see what a post is a year from now with the changing times.
