Gringa Gets a Legder Nano S

in #bitcoin7 years ago

Good Tuesday to all you Steemians!! With the run up in June of both BTC and ETH, I thought it might be a good idea to find a better way to secure some assets.

You read stories daily about how people lose their passwords or get hacked.

So I decided that I should buy a hardware wallet, since it's the safest ( idiot proof ) way to store some valuable little goodies offline. I firmly believe offline is the best.

Well, after some research, I decided on the Ledger Nano S.

Little did I know, they were nowhere to be found, at least at a reasonable price.

After I realized that my trusty Amazon account would not yield me a Ledger Nano, and ebay prices were crazy, I decided to buy directly from Ledger.

I actually received my Nano S yesterday by registered mail, way before they said I would arrive. That's right, they under promised and over delivered, super awesome.

Well, I thought you guys would get a kick out of a foodie doing a post about a hardware wallet. I can do more than just take pics of food, not much more, but a little.

ALL CONTENT IS MINE AND ORIGINAL! All of these food photos were taken with my Nikon D5300 and my favorite Lens, the Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G. You can find out more in my INTRO POST. And by the way, my intro post did a huge $0.21

So, what is your opinion of the safest way to store your assets?

Who will be the first to come out with a STEEM hardware wallet?

I have several. Really great products.

Make sure you have two copies of your 24 words stored in two different locations. Only write them down with pen and paper. Never type into a computer. That is the entire point of the device.

I recommend looking into the passphrase feature and the pin shuffling.
The passphrase allows you to set another word (so a 25th) to be required to access certain wallets. You can keep one word (memorized only) that you keep as a decoy to give to an attacker or government should they force you to reveal your password. This also acts as a security measure if your paper key backups get stolen by someone.

I just joined Steemit and good food is one of my top priorities in life. I recently preordered a Ledger blue. Shipment is set for end September. How long between order & delivery for your Nano S? I'll be sure to follow you and check out your recent food posts 😉

I have several, first ones came fast but that was years ago. I got a few for my family this summer and it was last batch so it took about a month. Came in last week. Next batch is September though.

That is awesome info, really awesome

no way, into this little thing all this is encrypted already? WOW!
That is crazy!

This is a genius investment! I wanna know if it works well for you!

I will definitely keep you posted

Yes after you get to try it out for a couple of weeks let us know your thoughts! I need to get one once my crypto accounts grow large enough.

This is really interesting @gringalicious. It gets me thinking.
This tool can give you more of an "in control" feeling.

I totally agree. It adds another level of freedom

Awesome post! Motivated me to make one myself after receiving mine yesterday. How's your experience with it so far? @gringalicious

I own a ledger nano(they don't sell it anymore) and a ledger nano S, and I can tell you that you won't regret :) they are a really good hardware

Fantastic @figox, thanks so much for chiming in

Do I need to get one now 😬

Well, perhaps. In my research, it's one of the safest ways to store offline while still having some ease of use.

I need a ledger too :(

Well, I hope you can get one soon @jwolf. Thanks for commenting

Nice writeup and good looking drive. I got the Trezor and love it, but have no clue if there's an advantage between one or the other. The Ledger Blue looks pretty awesome, so I've placed an order. It has to wait until they get stocked again.

From what I read, the Trezor and the Legder are neck and neck. I liked the form factor of the ledger and also the additional chip set. Fantastic comment, thanks so much for taking the time @anotherjoe

Hi gringalicious, what is that additional chip set?

Awesome. Been thinking of getting one myself.
Cheers

Well, I'm not a salesman nor an expert, but so far, I am happy

Looking at your profile I find it hard not to be hehe ^^
Cheers and all the best.

Mmmmm....that Ledger nano looks yummy! hahaha!

Not sure I'd recommend eating it - LOL. Thanks for commenting @truth-be-told

Man, you have just given me a great idea of a new bot I should make! It will keep track of @gringalicious’s account and whenever she posts something new, it should upvote the new post, scan its title, and then leave a comment: ‘Mmm, that [whatever is in the title] looks so yummy! Great pictures!’ It will save me about 5 minutes a day! :D

HAHAHA!!! Nice! She does have a great track record of making quality posts. And I'm a sucker for food pictures...well...good quality ones.

Look at that @gringalicious, a guaranteed "upvote" everytime, lol!!

Totally agree, she’s one of my favourite bloggers on Steem. I will keep reading and upvoting her posts, whether automatically or manually. ;)

Yeah, and I like the interaction...makes it more fun :-)

I need it how I can get it? Follow me pls

From my research, I'm convinced that a hardware wallet is very safe. I've been using a Trezor for about a year and a half and it has been great. I've heard yours is good, too, and probably they're about the same tool. Congratulations on a very wise purchase, @gringalicious !

That's awesome to hear about the Trezor. I am really glad to hear it's been good for you. And, I am glad to see that you agree it's a safe method of storage

Offline is best. I agree 100%. Especially if you are mining cryptocurrencies.

Well, I am not a miner, but I don't have the expertise nor the time to manage security, so I am thinking this is a great option for me

Dude, you should never mine directly to your hardware wallet. Its internal RAM is limited and shouldn’t be wasted on tons of microtransactions from mining. Instead, mine to a desktop or a smartphone hot wallet, then do a transfer to your hardware wallet once in a while, when you have accumulated a nice amount of the mined cryptocurrency in your hot wallet.

Hehe, I don't. I mine to a wallet, then transfer to the hardware wallet on a regular basis.

Good! I do it that way too.

I have an exact same hardware wallet – and I’m loving it! I keep my Bitcoins, Ether, Dash and ZCash on my Ledger Nano S. Good choice, Tori! :)

Fantastic, that makes me feel like I made a good decision!

Good article mate been thinking of getting one but how much was it . Cheers mike

It ended up being about $80.00 after shipping, more or less

Thank you for that mate cheers mike

I just got a Ledger myself! I ran into some issues, which I seem to have worked out, but I'm nervous about transfering funds now that I've had issues... 😖

Oh, issues. Can you share?

Great info! Thanks!

Thanks. I think this could help make life a donut.

I own a Ledger Nano S and can confirm that they are excellent and well worth the investment. Very easy to set up and use, in my opinion!

Fantastic, I am glad to hear it. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment @markhenson

I was looking at the option the other day and was interested in the KeepKey, but they are out of stock. Maybe by the time I have enough to rub 2 Bitcoins together, they'll have them back in stock.

Could be. I think all of these options are in high demand. It's fantastic that some companies got out there early and got these projects going. Great foresight

Ledger Nano S is the best and one of the most reliable hardware wallets. I am also willing to buy this one for myself. However, I am right now not much into bitcoins and Steemit. Thank you @gringalicious for this information. You can visit my world if you like @vinaypsychic.

I went for a trezor, I must say though that the nano certainly wins in the looks department!

Yeah, I do like the form factor, very small. I think the controls on the Trezor are probably more robust. But, both seem to be great options for offline which is becoming more and more important I think

I think so. No more fear for us!

It looks really cool!

Thanks so much @chitty. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment

So cool! And they delivered before the date they told?? How before??
I'm asking because I was always buying one in june 12th and they said the delievery would be in two months (just in 20 of August)!! As I was planning to offr it as a bday present, I changed my plans a bit. But I want to buy it from Ledger site too. I'm truly happy for you!

About 2 weeks earlier than expected. Thanks so much for your happiness for me @liliana.duarte

Good to hear!! :)

I am still learning all this. I am still at the stage of trying to figure out how to transfer my bitcoins/sbd in bittrex to a credit card or bank account. I can't figure it out. I will have to add this to my list. LOL!!!

I understand, it can all be very confusing, sometimes daunting. Feel free to msg me on chat and I can give some recommendations to make it easier, maybe.

How expensive was it? and how safe are they because I do have to protect my assets too. It is important to keep them safe if they represent future wealth :o

Hey @tioluis. It was about 90 USD. As far as it being safe, do your own research. This post was not advice, just sharing how good the customer service was. Thanks so much for commenting

You did well to get it. I have the next model down the Ledger Nano but it works very well!

Something I haven't figured out yet, maybe you know. If you need to recover your keys for whatever reason, for example you lose your nano, where do you recover them to? Do you have to have another nano to be able to recover?

How much did it cost? Also how many different cryptos can you store on it, or is it just for ETH?

Cheers

Cg

It's setup for BTC, ETH and LTC. It was around $90. Thanks so much for the questions @cryptogee

I got mine the other day as well! After bribing one of the sellers in Singapore with a few bucks extra when it was supposed to be sold out 😅

Well, at least you got one. I hope it works well for you @kuenok

@gringalicious I received mine also not too long ago and also did a full unboxing and set up post. I agree, it's a great investment. Cheers!

That's good to know. Looks like my timing was really good.
