IOTA began developing in 2014 & started an ICO in 2015 where all the first IOTA coins where created in Genesis transactions. Since then the coins have been distributed among the founders and the developers. Many of them have contributed their own money as they work on the project. As of 2016 the IOTA Foundation was developed and from that point forward, it grew in large numbers.
IOTA is currently trading in Bitfinex and Binance, these are the more popular exchanges as for now. Bittrex is looking into adding it to its platform, see the link below for list of exchanges:

IOTA is not just another digital money currency but moreover it's concentrated on Machine-2-Machine (M2M) exchanges. The primary reason for IOTA is to serve the machine economy by empowering feeless M2M (Machine-to-Machine) installments. Here are some differences about IOTA vs typical Blockchain platforms.

IOTA is based on a directed acyclic graph (DAG) aka the Tangle, not a Blockchain
IOTA has no mining, no blocks, no difficulty
IOTA has no transaction fees
IOTA scales almost infinitely, unlike Blockchains
IOTA is not solely made as a currency but as an interoperability protocol that solves the problems of the IoT
IOTA wants to enable the machine economy
IOTA is lead by the IOTA Foundation, an NGO registered in Germany as of 2017

IOTA can be utilized in many ways, for example there are numerous machine to machine cases yet in the event that you are searching for one associated with your life at this moment, here are some examples:

  1. Sensors selling data in real time to computational stations.
  2. Sensors buying analytical capabilities of computational stations.
  3. Consumers buying electricity from any kind of electricity generating prosumer.
  4. Devices buying storage space.
  5. Devices buying bandwidth on demand, with no need for subscriptions.
  6. Ensuring data integrity for IoT devices.
  7. Ensuring tamper-proof event logging for any kind of infrastructure.
  8. e-voting and e-governance."
