The Killdeer Charadrius vociferus has a very descriptive scientific species name. "Vociferus" obviously is latin for vocal or noisy. More often than not you'll hear a Killdeer before you see them, often loudly proclaiming "ki-dee" or sore of "Kill-deer" as if flushes or flies overhead.
Killdeer can be found on beaches, lawns, wet fields, and agricultural areas. they are in the plover family of birds, and we see them seemingly everywhere.
The double black breast band is usually seen, and differentiates this species from any other plover or shorebird we see in our area.
Typically Killdeer nest on bare ground and make just small "scrape" for their nest. They are famed for pretending to be injured and luring potential threats away from their nest and young.
If you're lucky you'll run into a Killdeer if you get out birding over much of North America.
Good birding.
