Southern Bald Ibis
Where ever we go in South Africa we are always looking to find birds to add to our life list.
Recently we have been blessed to have two sightings of a rear South African Bird - The Southern Bald Ibis.
The first was in the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains (Photo above)
The second was when we were hiking the Suikerboschfontein Hiking Trail in Mpumalanga Province - on the second day we came upon a breeding colony on these steep cliffs.
These birds are only found in South Africa and their numbers have been declining.
They are one of four Ibis species in South Africa
Bald Ibis? never heard of such bird, or is it because it's nearing extinction just like you said? Hiw come it's only found in SA?
That is the only recorded distribution range of this particular species although the Northern Bald Ibis can be found further North in Africa. They are also very rare birds so a sighting is one to remember.
