I am an expert in nothing, I like to draw my own conclusions from my own experiences. Sometimes I do add science to that, but its usually simple but powerful things that seem to get lost in the noise from real experts.
Wim Hoff stated that he could lower his resting heart rate by by up to 20 bpm by training the smooth muscle fibers that surround arteries and arterioles, (smaller arteries). He does this through extended cold water immersion which forces his arteries to contract or dilate. (Dying late seems to be the goal of most bio hackers, but I dont gaf lol).
Traditionally If I asked, what can I do to lower my resting heart rate, I would expect to hear answers like - lower your cholesterol, (non PUFA fat) intake or do cardiovascular endurance training.
Last time I measured my min. Heart rate was using an Apple Watch while I went to sleep. When I was training for SUP comps. And had “cardio” fitness, ( over 5 months ago) my ticker used to go back to 56bpm while I slept. As you are doubtless abundantly aware, I have been eating a diet of about 70% animal fat for over a year now. (Much of that time with zero plants).
Meditation would only take it down to about 66bpm (perhaps this is my true resting rate by classic definition?)
Cold water meditation - immersed in water at around 14 degrees C for up to 10min. Was the only way other than sleeping that I could get it to match REM, (rapid eye movement) or deep sleep. (Thats an assumption, but sounds so sexy).
Last night I measured it and sure enough 56bpm stated as resting..big deal right?
Yesterday I hit the cold pool because I was getting irritable - the world just was not matching my opinions again, pesky damn world.
(Bio-hack no. 1 - calm tf down or letting go is the only control I have anyway, cant stop the tide).
So I do roughly 8 minutes in cold water, then warm up again in either sauna or hot water, then repeat. I usually do this cycle 3 times - costs 150THB(5USD) to use the Train Resort Hotel facilities. Not perfect condition, but its quiet, cheap and they lend shorts, so I dont have to leave with a soggy bag. (Please don’t go there) I’ve been going about once a week on average.
Anyhow on my third cycle yesterday I hit 54bpm. Maybe the ole Hoffster is onto something? Too soon to tell, but lets see...
I'll be 48 this year, you’d think I’d have realized by now that some of us geeks will just never be Cool 🙂
