Several research shows that the word "selfie" originated in Australia with a young drunk
Nathan Hope, known as Hopey first using the word to describe a self-portrait photograph ( SELF.... - a picture taken by one self - ie... A known slang common among Australians) far back the year 2002. He went for a mate's 21st birthday — and had a little accident. He had some stitches and later went on an online forum to chat (as Hopey) to ask about the dissolvable stitches. When asked more about what he was talking about, he too a "SELFIE" Self shot to show his lower lip that was hurt.
No one really gave interest to the word then. The word is connected to social media and photosharing, meanwhile people have been producing Self-portraits far back 1839 (e.g Robert Cornelius) in philadelphia as an amateur chemist and photographer. It wasn't instantaneous as we have today.
That's how the word 'selfie' got into the English language. The usage of the word "selfie" grew slowly at first, but then took o In November 2013, it was declared that over the previous year, the usage of 'selfie' had increased by an astonishing 17,000 per cent.
