The bells, according to legend, had the power to drive away pestilence, thunderstorms and unclean spirits, and there is a story that Saint Anthony, whose great experience in fighting evil spirits is mentioned even in proverbs, walked among the ruins of pagan temples and with the sound of his bell drove away away from the devil who lived in them.
