Welcome to my Sunday suds review. Today I’m reviewing a recent beer I tried called Peanuts and Cracker Jack Porter by Mitten Brewing Company. This is a robust porter made with real roasted peanuts and peanut butter from Germack Pistachio Company.
I’m a peanut butter fan so I love beers that use real peanuts to create that roasted peanut flavor.
It pours black like most Porters with a creamy fairly dense head. It shows with a medium to high carbonation level. The aroma is strong with rich roasted peanut butter and smooth vanilla/toffee though out. That vanilla/toffee is more like a sweet buttery waffle cone now that I think of it. This could be the Cracker Jack.
The flavor is a bit mellow compared to the aroma. It has some deep burnt toast, thick peanut butter, warm nuttiness, slight sweet caramel, and vanilla biscuit/bread notes. It’s complex, but it does not punch you in the face.
The mouthfeel is very light. It’s way lighter than I wanted for a porter. It’s bot crisp or too dry, but more like it’s air. It’s kind of crazy how light this porter is. Overall, it's interesting, and pretty good. I think I would have liked the flavors intensified a bit to balance the aroma. I’d also like a bit more chew as the lightness was kind of crazy for the flavor/aroma profile.
Peanuts are such a tough taste to get right in a beer peanut butter is peanuty sure, but it's also buttery which is oil and oil and beer don't mix at all - It might be why you are getting the smell of the peanuts but the mouthfeel doesn't quite feel right - I'm impressed they tried.
Great points I think that could be the reason. I did not even think about it, but yeah the lighter mouthfeel was kind of smooth which could be oil.
I have heard of this beer but I have never tried it. It definitely sounds like something that I would like. I am going to have to check it out sometime. That is pretty crazy that it tastes so light for as dark as it looks. I would have expected it to be exceptionally heavy.
Its a good one, but yeah I like a thicker porters. Someone pointed out maybe it was the oil from the peanuts that contributed to the mouthfeel.
That could be.
I was going to say, that looks super rich...like heartburn rich! Interesting they made it light, however - do you think they threw some food coloring intensify the color?
I don’t think there was any food color added honestly I can’t figure out if it was the level of carbonation or maybe the combination of flavors They gave me the perception that it should be thick. It’s funny how the mind can play tricks on you. I had a brewery make a white stout one time and I can’t tell you how much these messed with me.
Yeah you never know - I worked for a brewery that used to make a winter porter and amber; both beers used a bit of food coloring to cheat on the styles.
I would not of thought of adding it. You are making me wonder...
Right...you never know; the place I worked for was pretty cheap, all things considered. From what I recall, it was an old "brewmaster" trick from back in the mass production days
Makes sense if you want to cut costs but that’s sacrificing quality for sure.
I like !BEER that punches me in the face. I like the peanuts and cracker jack idea, sounds tasty.
Was it cold or room temp? Would an adjustment make it better or worse?
Cheers
When drinking porters or stouts a drink I’m slow so you get the whole temperature range. Cold beer tends to mute the flavor profile. It’s kind of counterintuitive because you see all those beer commercials with ice cold glasses and he asked for some styles it’s OK but for stouts and porter just below room temperature is my favorite.
For sure, totally agree.
