Baandam Museum in Chiang Rai, north of Thailand

in #baandam7 years ago (edited)

Few days ago I went to the Baandam Museum that present the work of Thawan Duchanee.

Well, I wasn't expecting this when I entered the Museum. Because we visited 2 modern temples before, I kinda lost hope for the overall day trip organised by a local agent in Chiang Mai.

So the first thing that shocked me was the quality of the handcrafts. Each and every piece of wood was carved with the upmost skills. The overall atmosphere is woody dark, full of bones, buffalo horns and alligator skins. The guide explained the artist was a hunter.

The master piece of Master Thawan Duchanee is his garden in witch he spent 40 years creating a unique, strong and beautiful environment. Houses are high with high long roofs, every room is filled with furnitures and objects made of natural material and hand worked with style.

Many people may find his work morbid and hard to understand. I see life and beauty in those sculptures. A sense of harmony and religious feeling haunt this special Museum fare more than the other modern temples nearby.
