Axie battles - why we are not excited and what could be done (based on Beta testing)

“Know thy self, know thy enemy. A thousand battles, a thousand victories.” This quote from Sun Tsu summarizes the axie-stats part of game intro on the official site. “Strategy and cunning will be essential when planning battles and envisioning the order of your Axie’s moves”, - says the article, and yet it seems that no one but us sees here a problem.

The problem is that despite quotations from “Art of War” by Sun Tsu there is currently very little strategy and only digital art - and that is why: when you send your axies to battle you absolutely can’t KNOW who YOUR ENEMY is. “Glory in battle will come to those with the right mix of strategy and luck,” - says the same article further, but is it really so?

When you can’t know your enemy you surely need a lot of luck to win - but providing that your enemy also doesn’t know you - you just need better technology. It’s a Western way of war (look at America), you don’t have to be smart or cunning, it’s for weaklings, you have to be strong, the stronger the better. More advanced technology, more soldiers, more money - who counts expenses when discussing matters of National Defense?

Speaking of Axies, you need more axies, more rare and valuable traits, more ether to win in battle. I may be wrong, but the game starts reminding me of Cryptokitties - forth come the whales with their invincible teams and battle each other while other players timidly watch from aside and sigh looking at their cute axies.

I may be wrong, but if I am right then common people soon will start to lose interest in Axie Infinity. Terrariums are yet to come and so far there isn’t much they can do with their axies. But what can be done? All creature battles are more or less following the same scenario - you have your team, you set their moves, you hope the luck will be with you this time and that’s it. Then what if we’ll look back in history, say, as far as the Middle Ages with famous knight tournaments, and take a slightly different approach?

Well, that’s what I mean:

You have a team and want to fight, then you “make a call” - it’s like posting your axie for siring, but you post your entire team. Yes, it means you won’t know your enemy but at least your potential opponents would have the possibility to evaluate their chances, choose better team and devise better strategy while trying to guess yours. Do you think the game would become much more interesting then? As a potential opponent, I surely do.

But won’t the “caller” lose all the time? If his opponents have all chances to prepare themselves, doesn’t it mean a sure loss for a calling team? Then who would do it?

  1. Advanced, confident players with elite teams. They already do anything to make their axies invincible, so the “new system” won’t change the game for them.

  2. Common people who can’t afford rare axies. So far all they can to do to get some dough is to sire their axies, but when they may get ether, their axies would lose xp. On the other hand, posting their teams for battle will bring them ether and some xp to their axies! Moreover, whales most likely will play with each other, so common people opponents will be more or less in the same league, and chances to win would be quite good even for calling team.

  3. Everyone. Money make the world go round, and as I already said, the caller does actually lose nothing.

So… what do you think?
