As the pandemic hit the Philippines, people in the Philippines have found a way to ease
their hardship brought by lockdowns- playing video games.
The game, however isn’t just for fun. Axie Infinity, created by SkyMavis, allows players to
earn income through nonfungible tokens, or NFTS, and cryptocurrencies by breeding,
battling and trading digital pets called Axies.
The game however needs investment to start playing. In mid 2020, it cost just $5 to buy a
team of three Axies – the Pokémon-inspired NFT pets whose owners battle them against
other Axies for the chance to win SLP as their prize. Today, a decent team will set you
back around $1,000-$1400 or Php 50,000-Php70,000.
But the Axie community has developed scholarships. This is a a win-win situation for the
new players and the Axie owner. The Axie owners will rent their NFTs to new players so
they can play the game and start earning SLP without having to buy any NFTs or invest
any money upfront.
Earnings will be split among the player, the NFT’s owner and the community manager –
the one responsible for recruiting, training and mentoring the new player. The only upfront
requirement of the new player is time, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.
The success story is everywhere. With the money earned playing Axie. People have
brought new cellphone, new shoes. Families have paid their kids school fees, electric bill
and brought digital device for their online schooling. Teenagers become breadwinner of
their family helping ease their financial needs. Some brought lands and even have their
own team.
