My introduction - A chink in my armour for a glimpse within...

in #australia8 years ago (edited)

G’day everyone I’m coming to you from Down Under! Well, to be honest,
‘down under' is not a term we tend to use when describing where we live so let’s scratch that and simply go with Australia. I’m new to Steemit so feel an introduction post is appropriate and a good way to break the ice. I’m a little nervous as I would usually not open up in a forum like this...

I’m a pretty typical Aussie guy really. Like so many people here I’m a product of a marriage between an immigrant father, and a fourth generation Australian; One of 5 siblings. Being born into a mixed marriage had it's challenges back when I was young. We live in a very multicultural society here now but in the 60's and 70’s it was completely different. Thoughts on that later. My lineage on my mothers’ side heralds from English convict stock when a couple hundred years ago the penalty for minor theft, say a loaf of bread to feed one’s children, was death. However often the sentence was commuted to 'transportation' to the penal colony that was Australia at the time. Two of my ancestors arrived in chains, a man and woman.

But that’s a story for another post as is further thoughts on our society, challenges, positives, negatives and benefits around multiculturalism and many other topics I’m passionate about. For now however I’ll stick to the here-and-now and my brief introduction post. Please, read on…

I’m a married guy of 40 (or so) years old and work as a manager heading up a dealership retailing off-road extreme camper trailers. Past roles include a long stint in management at an auto plant then some 12 years as a licenced land agent (realtor) as principle of my own company and within an international franchise specializing in residential, commercial and development property sales and leasing. My wife and I also own and operate our own business, which we started 24 years ago so you could say we are reasonably busy professionally.

me for a moment.png

We have a small family, well… We have two cats you’ll meet in the future and as generally is the case, they run our household. Cleo and Merlin have personalities of their own and we’d not be without them. We love our little family and focus on making our way through life the only way we know how, being the best people we can be as often as we can. Our ethos is "design and create our ideal life rather than live it by default."

I’ve typically been an outdoorsy person so spend my personal time camping, off-roading, kayaking, hiking and shooting which are things I will write about over time, especially my passion for practical/precision long range rifle shooting and the competitions I compete in…And my beloved 4x4.

My wife and I share a passion for travel, history and learning about other countries, cultures and people, which is partly why Steemit is so attractive. We avoid the traditional online “social” media platforms where possible and I hope Steemit will be a great substitute to engage with like-minded people. We’ve been to Europe, all over Asia and have travelled throughout much of Australia preferring quality over quantity immersing ourselves in the culture in each place we go. It’s an amazing world in which we live with so much to absorb, so many thought-provoking sights sounds and experiences; Some of which I’ll share with you.

So, I look forward to sharing my thoughts, observations, opinions and lessons I’ve learned throughout my time on this place we call earth and hope to show some value to you guys.

Thanks for reading and follow for more insights to come.

Hi seablue - how about joining us at TEAM AUSTRALIA - following you mate. SK.

Hi seablue, thanks for the welcome. An Aussie in the US of A huh? I wonder what took you there. I'm sure I'll find out. I hope to post some valuable content and to meet some great people along the way.

G'day and welcome! I'm @richq11 the resident "crazy old man" of Steemit! If you're friends with @seablue, you're friends with me. Steemit is a wonderful community in the true sense of the word and I'm sure you'll like it here. I do some shooting myself- I did some competitive shooting in Vietnam. This is my baby...

Thanks... Glad you're here. This is REAL community!

Welcome to Steemit @galenkp!

How was it like to start a business with your wife ? In the beginning, was it hard?

@thatmemeguy Thanks for your welcome. Our business started organically meaning it just sort of sprang up around us. Once we realized that some formal structure was required (which happened quickly) we pushed on with strategic planning and execution. It was difficult initially. We had income but also big ideas so making them happen required additional funds. It worked out though through the hard work, mainly, of my wife. 25 or so years later it's still going strong.

I also started my own real estate company which maybe I'll speak about sometime.

So, thanks for your comment. I hope to entertain my fellow steemians in the future.

Thanks for such a detailed answer! I am curious to know because I am new to business and companies and hearing from older people that managed and thrive for such a long time its huge for me

Great intro! Welcome to Steemit! I wish you lots of fun and success here and am looking forward to see your posts!

Haha, straight to the point. Yeah, I love my cats so I'm sure steemians will be seeing a lot more of them. Thanks for the favourable comments on my intro and the welcome.

My old man designs power converters for Redarc :)
Welcome aboard mate.

Hey mattclarke, REDARC are an awesome brand. I run their brake controller (Tow Pro Elite) and BCDC1220 on my Ranger. I've actually toured the REDARC factory in Londalse SA a couple years ago. An amazing experience. Thanks for the welcome champ, I look forward to getting after it with some more posts and hope to add some value!

Welcome, I look forward to your future posts. Is the rifle a .223 or .308? Very nice set up!

Hi swenger, the rifle in the image is my 6.5mm Creedmoor. I'll post some more about my competition shooting and the peripheral things I do to support it like hand re-loading, required equipment, load development, gaining of sponsors, training and practice as well as the mental aspect of the sport. Thanks for the welcome, I look forward to engaging with like-minded people more and more.

Welcome to the wonderful world of steemit! You will definitely have a great experience here.
Feel free to follow @GLOBALFOODBOOK to get updates on assorted delicious recipes from all over the world.

You had me at the gun. Welcome to Steemit!

Haha, well it seems like you're a like-minded soul... Rest assured I'll post some more on that topic and hope to engage with people like yourself Jason. I shoot PRS matches and tactical/practical long range competitions (most recently the Vortex Cold Steel Open in Mildura AUS), and engage in all the peripheral things around it too like hand-loading my own ammunition. I look forward to sharing my experiences.

I've followed you and I look forward to reading more. I'm down in Melbourne but grew up in the south in the USA. My dad and grandfather taught me to load ammo as a boy. About all I miss in the US is family, friends, and my guns :)

Welcome @galenkp, glad you have joined us. Really enjoyed your intro post and look forward to reading more about your life in Australia and travels. I am really interested to see these off road campimg trailers you sell now. I love the outdoors and we use a pull behind travel trailer at some of the camp grounds around Kentucky. Also, i am a real estate broker and run my own company with just me and my wife. Do you still do any land sales or property sales?

Upvoted, Followed, & ReSteemed!!

Hey Nathan, thanks a bunch for your positive comments. I'll post about my work and the trailers the company manufactures in coming weeks with loads of pictures and details. Isn't it interesting how a couple of people wolds apart have such similar backgrounds? I am still a licensed Land Agent but do not engage in property sales anymore. Towards the end of my career I focused mainly on residential development however selling to mums and dads, first home buyers and everyone in between gave me great rewards and enjoyment. No doubt I'll hear more about your business and look forward to doing so.

Again, thanks so much for the warm welcome.

@galenkp, it is amazing and interesting to meet people from all over the world with similar interests, and one of the reasons I love Steemit. I look forward to your future posts.

'camping, off-roading, kayaking, hiking and shooting'Hi @galenkp - great intro - bet you have the opportunity to get some great pics and stories when... . You mate @tarazkp is nominated you to be a TEAM AUSTRALIA member, and after this intro... it is I who would personally like to request that you join our team and build our STEEM together. Please join us at the 'teamaustralia' tag. SirKnight.

Hi sirknight, thanks for your comments on my intro post. Yes, I have a lot of stories, observations and opinions around my hobbies and activities. I look forward to sharing. I would be pleased to join your team so thank you so much for the invite. I look forward to engaging some more.

Excellent galenkp - I will send around a member update in the next couple of days. In the meantime feel free to share at tag 'teamaustralia'. Cheers, SK.

Nice one @galenkp. As an aussie and minutes new old user I appreciate the story for inspiration for my own first intro post. Curious, how did you happen upon steemit? Let's just say that "blokes" into offroading, kayaks and guns typically don't end up in blockchain based social media platform experiments... curious to know!

Hey corkandkerry, thanks for your nice remarks on my first post.

I'm grateful for my brothers' referral to steemit and his insistence that I get on board as he feels I have a lot of value to add through my hobbies and experiences. I'm on Facebook but rarely comment on it and if I do I delete it after only a day or so. I don't see value there but with steemit I have already connected with some great like-minded people.

I see steemit as a place where my experiences may be valued, or not, but somewhere I feel comfortable laying out my opinions and thoughts. Plus, Zuckerberg doesn't get paid from my posts! All the best with your steemit experience from one newb to another.

I think that is the best part. No more middlemen!

Nice to meet a fellow Aussie and look forward to future posts, following.

Hey christa, thanks for following. :)

My pleasure ,

Welcome to Steemit. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do! :-)

Hey Stephen,
Great post! that's a nice rifle you have there! Used to shoot 22 and 1911 competitively. What a rush. look forward to reading more. Upvoted and followed:)

Stephen? Well, anyway...thanks for the upvote and follow @majorlazer.

Hey mate! love your post. Looking forward to your future posts. I live in South Australia (Adelaide) and LOVE the outback. That's where the heart of Aus is. Moved to Aus from Africa four years ago. Getting my priorities straight the first thing I bought was a 80 series :D
(Outback as we call it here in Australia).
If you like to see my outback travels please follow my blog.
