AskSteemit: Newcomers on Steemit, what are your thoughts of the platform so far?

in #asksteemit7 years ago

For some of us older members who have spent countless of hours and days on the platform already it can easy be forgotten what it felt like the first few days and weeks when you got here. Although a lot of things were very different at the time and the platform has become a lot more easy to navigate through it can still be a challenge for newcomers, especially those who are brand new to the cryptocurrency and block-chain scene.

I wanted to make this post for the recent newcomers, feel free to ask anything you are wondering about and express how the platform looks for you right now.

I hope you've taken the time to read through the FAQ's and learned the basics cause that's really important but other than that it will only take a lot of practice and trial by error to get a good foot on the block-chain. :)

How has your first experience on Steemit been?

Well, actually I got into steemit on the 2nd of December 2017. I may not consider myself as new becasue I have spent a Lil time round here but still don't really know the very little details about the community yet. Despite that fact, I have recruited a lot of people into steemit and putting them through with the little knowledge and idea I have about steemit.

My major confusion lies with the fact that, getting a whale to see you post is quite difficult. How do we know the tags these whales visit? How do we get them to see our quality contents? How do we get to make them pick interest in us and make us their friends?
Steemit is like a wide ocean and a lot of people come in confused and lost. I think knowing that answers to these few questions would help.

Thanks alot for being thoughtful enough to do this.

Unbehalf of other minnows like me we say THANK YOU

There are only 37 whales so it is not worth your effort to pursue them unless you have thrilling content beyond compare or are a primo butt-kisser who can do this skill without annoying people.

It is much better to reach out to people more near your level. Develop your presence here, enter contests, interact. Then you will have a reason for whales to look at you maybe.

Owk what really qualifies anyone to be a whale coz in my own point of view I would say you are a whale looking at the fact that your reputation is 61. But on the contrary, you just said there are 37 of them and I know I have seen lots of people with reputation above 60 so what really qualifies or tell that someone is a whale?

Whales are users with a lot of voting power. I'm not sure what the threshold is exactly. Reputation doesn't factor into it.

I find my interests are very tag-based, but we can't follow tags. I see the value in following great content creators, but beyond that what are the other ways to find my way around here?

I've manually saved a list of interesting tags that I browse manually, but I feel like there's gotta be a better way to navigate here.

I love how Steemit seems pretty dense with intelligent people and a real sense of community. The rest of the internet has far too many divisive fools.

Tag follows will come soon with communities. :)

That is one aspect of reddit I liked and wish steem had. Obviously on steem they would be open communities which would be great.

Awesome! Yet another example of Steemit's continual evolution.

I also really enjoy reddit, but take in mind reddit has had a great time to mature and improve. I think steemit will change and improve over time and possibly even overtake reddit. When you are talking about communities are you referring to the equivalent of subreddits?

That's what I imagine communities would be.

I've spent a lot of time with Wordpress and with other writing sites (Ezine Articles, Hubpages, et al) and to be honest I found Steemit to be quite easy to pick up, even with the markdown. That's from the writing/posting standpoint.

I'm still working on the social aspect. There's only so much time in a day, and I find that between writing my own posts, commenting on others posts, and replying to comments on my posts I rarely have time to participate in any of the groups I've become part of on Discord.

Then there are the more complex areas such as reputation, curation, and the question of whether to power up or not. I think I got a pretty good handle on these, but it did take a few weeks worth of reading, searching, digging, and reading some more.

Overall I like Steemit, and not only for the payment aspect. The community is very welcoming here, and focused more on creativity and adding value, which is a breath of fresh air when compared with other communities I've been involved with where there's money at stake.

I do believe I'll stay for a while longer, and I hope I can bring some friends over as well.

Well i really enjoy using steemit, i learned a lot about cryptos and blockchain technology using steemit and my english writing skills are also improving and it's true for new comer's it's difficult to understand steemit from day 1 and i think it would be great if steemit team add some basic learning material in shape of tutorials and video tutorials in steemit.com.

It's great of you to post something like this @acidyo. I signed up over the summer, was on here for a month, had difficulty and quit until late December. My second time around has gone a lot better. I'm investing more time into the community as opposed to just trying to make money. I've been reading more, commenting more, following more people... and it's been a much more positive time the second time around. I hope I keep growing here!

not sure, confusing ?
Buy SP and steem will be yours

My first few days felt slippery. You have to be told or read about everything here to understand how this place works. I still haven't mastered the platform yet. I will, with time. But so far, it has been challenging.

Thanks for asking.

Best of luck! :)

Thank you.

You know, I still haven't read through the FAQ after being on here for over a year now. #SteemitRebelBoiiiiiii

lol, well at this point you probably know most there is to know... I hope. :P

Yeah, don't worry. I'm gonna be posting a bunch of tidepod challenge videos that don't belong to me with some stolen artwork I found on Tumblr. That's all good to go, right ;)?

(Sarcasm, for anyone who can't tell. Which sadly seems to be a lot of people these days ಠ_ಠ)

I have been on the platform for about 6 months now, but I didn't have any previous experience with crypto before. I found that it took a lot of googling and people gently telling me about certain things like voting power, before I really felt like I got a decent handle on it. There is certainly a learning curve to it, but if you have the will to get over the initial hump, it starts making sense. Eventually.

Surely. I'm still trying to get over the "initial hump" fully.😂

Hello,

From my (French speaker) point of view, we have a great chance to have @Roxane !
She built a global Steemit training with a lot of videos and training support.

Therefore my first days on Steemit was great and I immediately enjoyed the fact they were a real community here.

Steemit is a place where we can build, create and design our own and new way to impact people. It's so incredible I can't describe this feeling !

Sometimes all those currencies and rewards seems to me too impactful but I stick to my first goal : write as much as possible about self development in order to help people, to help them to develop themself and if I succeed I don't care about tokens and so, it would be totally amazing to reach this goal thanks to Steemit.

That was my point of view.

Have a nice day,
Laurent

Best of the best !
turning many people more things into positives

In beginning, i was not aware about the potential of this platform. i was not a active user because i have't earned a penny from many tries. once i saw a post from you and i decide to comment on it . this was that post
Capture45.PNG

And here is what i commented. it was my highest payout i have received ever , That time.
Capture44.JPG

It gives me the motivation to do more and i started commenting more than blogging.
And after some days, i made some friends on steemit and also started blogging.
Before coming at Steemit i have't earned much cash and friends from any platform. joining steemit was the best decision i have taken in 2017 and i am enjoying my decision.
After that my interest towards the platform steemit is increasing day by day.i looked at my interests and hobbies and started blogging about it.steemit is the very first platform who makes me to learn about crypto currencies and i am very happy.
Steemit has proved that it is the best platform for me and for many others who are enjoying here. i have decided to refer my some of friends to come and join this beautiful platform.
I love to be a part of this community. Very thankful to the person who invited me to join Steemit.

Thanks for allowing question @acidyo

I have a question, now my Steem Power is 51, but after getting this my Delegated SP from Steemit disappear. So my vote power is also less.
Why delegate SP disappear?

I will be grateful for guidance.

Hello my friend thanks for supporting us..we are new on steemit that we have to learn more about steemit and cryptocurrency..which you guys are helping us to discover new things..i live in undeveloped country where not much people know about cryptocurrency.thats why we need your advice and help.😊

Thanks that you are supporting new comer...steemit is a great platform to achieve a success in life for us..i will learn more from you.

The journey so far has been really a challenging one with full of experiences for me. Everyday I learn new thing, face a new challenge and keep aiming much to learn how steemit actually work.
Steemit is a platform that worth much of our time and am much maximizing my time and giving steemit the very best time I can so that I will much improve to my best and the other of the community too.
Recently, I found out that my interests goes beyond what I have ever thoughts initially before joining steemit... Smiles.
I do follow great content curators but despite the challenges of them seeing a little of my post each day, I still do admire them and keep hoping much that they will definitely come across my blog page sometime soon.
Patience worth the gain despite the hard aspect of it all.
I love steemit, I love the challenge it gives and it's the best out of all the social platform out there.
It worth much of my time and I will give it out to improve much.
The experience and feelings of @OCD resteeming my post last week leaves me really speechless.

Yes you are right and i am crypto expert and i joined steemit just 3 days ago and i post only crypto news and analysis so follow me and learn

And im the pope :)

I want to preface this with an apology for the longwinded rant. It's just that this has been on my mind from the befinning and I think it's relevant and worth saying/listening to. I hope you check it out and throw back at me what you think. Arguments and all. PLEASE, don't be polite and vanilla in your responses. Let's have some real conversation here!

Okay, so I first signed ~6 months ago and quickly went back to reddit. I found this place to be riddin with e-beggars and shallow content. It didn't feel like a community, more like a sales convention promoting a pyramid sceme.

I came back a coupe weeks ago to give it another try and it seems to have gotten somewhat better. There' some pretty good content here and there. And a quite a few engaging people who actually have well thought out and interesting comments/replies. But there's still so much e-begging and a relentless, obnoxious focus on getting Steem, to the exclusion of everything else. That seems to outweigh the good.

And don't get me started on the bots, the convoluted gambling with Steem/Sbd schemes, and the increasing drama, and vote sharing between cliques of whales, and the little people who desperately want to swim with them in hopes of getting some of their Steem crumbs and maybe getting invited in with the cool kids.

And, oh God, the lack of sincerity. I mean, just look at the masses of posts and generic comments all of over the place that have no depth or concern with any real community engagement. It's all so...soooo shallow and boring!

Though, posts like this one seem to have more depth, and the comments here have something to say that doesn't just look like it was copy/pasted from generic, embarrassingly FB-like-quality image macros and poorly reflected thoughts and opinions.

And oh, so so many of the posts/comments are as shallow as a puddle in the dessert. Just look at all the posts that write a whole lot of nothing, and the few comments on those posts that are nothing more than a ten word, painfully insincere set of platitudes and two or three word token responses like "Great work!" or "You're so talented!' that obviously took 2 seconds to write and even less time to consider. AND that, somehow, they have more Steem rewards from just that one pitifully small group of interactions than we small guys have accrued on Steemit during the weeks, and even months of being here.

I hope that the small, truly interested members here focus heavily on a community of mutual interest and authentic engagement that concerns itself with the deeper reasons for having an online community. People who stop laying on the fake, generic comments and actually join in, regardless of how much Steem they might get. Oh, and ACTUALLY UPVOTE what they like, not just what has the best potential for Steem rewards!

I just want a community where we follow each other, post content that comes from who we are, and not just what we hope will rake in Steem from popular tags and whatnot. To engage with each other with something meaningful. And just be happy with whatever Steem rewards we get. Eventually the Steem will come anyway, once the traffic gravitates toward more things of substance and not just the cabal of whales and their cliques funneling it all to their wallets.

And please, please can we stop being so fake. No need to be rude, but this overly polite thing makes Steemit seem like a Mormon reddit. All vanilla, no spice, and increasing unchallenging.

Hi. I'm new here. I wrote about 12 posts, and got a maximum of 15 votes. It is 0.62. I try to write interesting posts, put them at the right time to be seen by as many people as possible, but do not get so many responses, no matter how much I wanted. It is not only not just about the money. When you write a post, you want to see the reaction of the audience to know their opinion. I was haunted by this fact. I see really interesting posts, people have spent a lot of time writing this post. But the post has gained very few votes. And Vice versa post with a photo and couple of sentences is gaining a huge number of votes. It's a shame. I understand that in order to achieve something, you need other and hard work, and Steemit. Every day I spend here at least 4 hours. I began to sleep less during the night)
I try to write quality comments to the posts that are interesting to me and when I really have something to say.
I have two questions - how to make your posts more popular, to be seen by more people? Whether to attract bots?
And I'm interested in the question of curator. What you need to do to become a curator? Thanks in advance for the answer!

My first post was unexpected, I gained enough upvotes. But, as I make another blog post, I find it hard to gain upvotes, that made me try to find another way to gain more upvotes. That won't stop me from steeming, gotta steem on!

I just joined and it is really overwelming trying to take everything in. I am trying to learn block chain all while making my own original content. I try to properly tag my posts but i find no way to dearch by tags for my personal intrests or am i doing it wrong?

i find no way to dearch by tags for my personal intrests

The best way I've found is to write them into the url. So for example if you're interested in fishing, you can add the tag "fishing" to the url, like this: https://steemit.com/trending/fishing

There's also a page where you can see "all" tags (except it's not actually all tags): https://steemit.com/tags

Awsome. Thank you very much.

Steemit is a new platform for us.i discover steemit just 15 days ago..I wish i had discover steemit earlier. But im glad that im now on steemit where i leran much more about cryptocurrency and crypto market which I never heard that before..thank to you guy who make steemit popular..look forward to learn more from you.

It’s a little intimidating. I am accustomed to instant access, but had to wait over two weeks to get an account. Second, I don’t get the whole “block-chain” nature of this platform. I mean, who are the miners? Are we all miners? Where is this post actually housed. I have no Steem tokens to share? How do I get more? How much is this going to cost me? Who, exactly is getting my money? Third, how to I use this crazy thing? Can’t seem to find what I am looking for.

Guess I should read the FAQ page first, but nothing here seems obvious.

Honestly there are a few things that steemit reminds me of. It's very class-based, and not in the druid/ranger/wizard kind of way.

People just seem... muted. I addressed this pervasive feeling I get that everyone self-censors themselves and so no one really seems like themselves in another rant of mine.

People are inviting to newcomers, but almost in a weirdly too friendly way, and there seems to be a weird split between the few who knows how things really works, and the many who are ill-conceived on how everyone else who is dong well from the platform are actually doing so.

I see lots of posts that laud people for getting others hyped about steemit, but they always come off as less of a genuine recommendation from a friend to try out a decent product and a bit more like a hey bro I've made a lot of money selling these knives/life insurance/energy drinks do you also want in on this great opportunity kind of pitch. The samesies feeling that you're trying to "give people the opportunity to own their own business right from home" kind of shit people should run from is actually enticing to many users here, and I think the dollar signs they see others receiving are kind of blinding them to some harsh realities.

It's literally not possible for everyone to get rich from something, people. Someone somewhere has to pay for something.

And why do I have a feeling that people who speak about uncomfortable topics find themselves stuck out on a cruise ship somewhere? Where are the voices of dissent? Have they just left? I've found some flagged comments linked, and holy crap if that kind of tame, honest line of questioning is flagged then I can only wonder how other higher orders of hard-hitting stuff gets dealt with by those profiting from the site.

I'm honestly grateful for the votes on comments I've received here and there, but looking at the raw stats for other newer bloggers, the hoops you have to jump through to succeed, and all of the politiking required to move up the ranks leaves me on the fence about blogging or creating content full-bore. I'll be blunt here, I hate pay-to-win, I hate things that aren't meritocracies, and I do not like tribalism. I see way too much back-patting going on around here, so much so that it seems like a weird mix between a multi-level marketing scam, a religious cult, and a very nepotistic government bureaucracy crammed into one at times.

I mean, this stuff must have eaten away at me at least a little for me to write this the other day. If I was to be honest if steemit wasn't some weird meta-game about money, power and politics that interests me on a few levels then I don't know if I would use it for long as just a social media site. I do enjoy being able to participate in a small community, and I love pissing people off and being contrarian so I guess I have that going for me. I'm not trying to bite the hands that feed me, but I have to hope they understand that the Korean funny money party punch won't last forever, and we shouldn't get people hyped about something just because of a price pump that has finite power behind it.

It's been fun on one hand and challenging on the other.

fun because I've been able to connect with a lot of cool folks from other countries. I even got to make friends within my country from steemit.

The challenge comes with the reward (no pun intended) I joined because I heard I could get rewarded for quality posts. Turns out they meant to say popular posts.

It's all good, it's all fun, its all a learning adventure

I genuinely value using steemit, I took in a ton about cryptos and blockchain development using steemit and my english composed work aptitudes are in like manner improving and it's substantial for new comer's it's difficult to understand steemit from day 1 and I figure it would be unprecedented if steemit aggregate incorporate some fundamental learning material perfectly healthy of instructional activities and video instructional activities in steemit.com.

My second time around has gone a lot better. I'm investing more time into the community as opposed to just trying to make money.

Especially those who are brand new to the cryptocurrency and block-chain scene. You are right...Day by day it will smarter platform

Ouu. Great...I loves to spend time on it.It is interesting :)

Wow loved your post...loved reading it....it's amazing....thank you for sharing have a good day.

Why experience on steemit for the first time feel like me doing some hot examination final year. I thought steemit is like some social network like facebook, instagram and twitter when you post and see plenty likes or comments on your post.
But here in steemit is a very different case, i think i will ask you a question, how do you make it on steemit @acidyo

The first experience in steemit is very saturated because every post we do not like and comment on it, until now sometimes its like only one person and even then no effect on upvote its, how do you think, can be aided @acidyo

excellant for new membar such as me 🙂

i understand can not so i used google transalate 😑😑😑😐😐😐😐

Wow wonderful post buddy :)
Thanks for sharing with us . Keep it up :)

@upvoted and @Resteem done.

Nice post

It's a spam comments

I have only 04 months experience here in steemit platform. I have heard and lot of tryied to taken my brother com around on this platform. First week so boring to me. But After 01 month I studied more and known more genius authors. Then I take great knowledgement here.
@acidyo, Maybe you know. my Engish language little bit bad. But before come to steemit my english knowledgement so bad. Steemit looks to me way how to improve Language skills.
I feel like it is very easy to get anywhere on Steemit. When I first heard about it, I was like "That's awesome!" But the more I started looking around, the more I realized that even as a side-hustle it probably wouldn't be worth it unless you are regularly uploading quality content and can get lots of followers.
Thanks for giving opportunity to tell something.

there's a lot of things that I still didn't understand well as a new comer. And its hard though to get along with the other users.
but this platform is surely better that the other social media and make me eager to explore more. thanks for sharing and asking btw.

So far so good, but I have to be careful what I post. I noticed that older posts cannot be edited or deleted. I wanted to add photos to my older posts, but unable to do it.

Oh I love 💕 your animation. How did you do it?

I really like it so far! Very easy to use great community and lots of great information.

Steemit for me is the best social media platform I've join. We have facebook, instagram and twitter where most of our network are our friends and relatives, we will, of course, get likes and comments on our post. However, what I love most here in this platform is the interaction with other Steemians. I knew only a couple when I joined last December my previous Bosses and luckily now I am reaching 500 followers. I love the genuine advice and support I received from Steemians. I love to interact and add comments on post I like and I greatly appreciate how accommodating and helpful everyone here on the platform. I received the best advice I need. The fact that we can interact and communicate with people around the globe without personally knowing the person is such a wonderful expeience, honestly I can say I made great friends with some Steemians and I find happiness in this platform, not just the income you'll get but you'll definitely meet genuine friendship from around the world! I would like to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart!

Thank you very much @acidyo! :)♥

First of all i would like thankyou for caring newbies. I found this platform so.amazing and beneficial, but for newbie it is difficult to get these benefits early but i'm pretty sure by following mentors like you and other we'll also get to the top as soon.as possible. I founding some problems in creating posts but I'll learn it soon, thanks again May God bless you Always

I enjoy using steemit.

I'm glad I discovered Steemit and the potential it has to defining a new fork in my life's journey. A journey on the blockchain trend where I get to contribute content on multiple Steem based channels, build new relationships and hopefully make some money to support my lifestyle. I am a little disturbed by tactics to 'speed up' success on the platform. Just because we can technically do it; it should not mean that the goals of the platform be set aside for short-term gain. Only a small percentage of accounts are active beyond a year. Some actors have too much power to destroy the platform - reward pool plunder / rape. I trust that some of these issues will eventually get sorted out and those of us who are patient and persistent will be rewarded.

I'm loving it so far. So far i've found the community much more welcoming than reddit - waaaay more supportive and helpful. It does take a ton of learning to figure out all this stuff, so I think that'll have to be worked out if it really wants to go mainsteem.... but maybe it doesn't have to. The barriers perhaps keep it good. My 2cents.

I dont want to be labelled as the negative guy but yeah so far on my 2 weeks here ive been seeing people disagreeing on how to use the platform and what should you do and what not but despite all that steemit proves to me that the real power is with the people even though some may take advantage of it.

Excited on my plan for my own steemit events in my city!

Good morning, @acidyo!
First of all, as a new person, I am still learning the ropes as regards tags (as do most of we newbies).
More importantly, however, is that Steemit entails a Steemian being detailed. We are used to just refreshing on Facebook, or doing a less detailed tag search on Twitter. Here, everything is about specifics. One has to be very specific about what (s)he is searching for.
Lastly, I don't know how to source for contests (I'm working on that; I have participated in just one.
Lastly, I should think that the older ones should understand that not all newbies start out a conversation just to ask for upvotes. In all honesty, that may be the end game, but there is nothing like having experience as a friend!
So long, @acidyo!
