HI Steemians! Hope all doing well :D
Oh yay!! March 13, 2018 has just passed and I just turned 27 years old.. a little bit older yet I’m young still ! 😀 My family tradition that we have been doing since forever.. Every birthday, the birthday person treats family a nice dinner!
Who doesn’t like spicy food?
Hmm.. maybe I’m a bit exaggerating here. Well, at least, no one in my family doesn’t like spicy food. We all do! so if you get an idea, every time when we get together for a big meal, we spice it up to the fullest! LOL I’m using this opportunity taking photos of all the food we ordered on my birthday a few days back and of course, the videos that I will be editing in the next few days. Can’t waittttt!
The restaurant we went to was not so far from the family house. Located in Nakhon Pathom. My family’s been here quite a lot of time but first time for me. Loved it already and totally will dine there again and again..
Let’s talk about the dishes one by one..
Spicy stir-fry bitter beans with shrimps (สะตอผัดกุ้ง)
I am sure it’s not common at all in some other countries to eat ‘Bitter beans’ or ‘Stink beans’. You might not even know what it is, let me guess. Why don’t check out on wiki here. So you know what it looks like. In Thai we call this type of beans/vegetable ‘Sa taw’. Keep in mind, not everyone likes the taste and the smell of it. In addition, it makes your pee smells even worse.. Oopsy! sorry if you’re eating when you’re reading this.
To be honest, I don’t think the beans are as bitter as its name in English. I mean, it’s delicious! We usually cook these bitter beans in this spicy stir fry with spicy paste and shrimps. The dish called ‘Sataw pad goong’. So flavourful with all these garlic, chilli and fish sauce. It got a good spiciness to it ❤ My favourite dish!
Phak whan spicy salad (ยำผักหวาน)
First of all, I tried to look up the English word for ‘Phak Whan’ which pretty much means ‘Sweet Vegetables’ but there’s kinda no exact answer for that on the internet. Let’s go with transliterated word. This type of veggie get a really nice crisp texture to it and doesn’t taste bitter like some other types of vegetable at all.
Spicy salad, in Thailand called ‘Yum (ยำ)’ is the way you mix ingredients and seasoned them with Chilli, fish sauce, lime juice and a bit of sugar. Those are the main things they use to give dishes flavours. Some other condiments may be added depends on each person’s recipe.
Spicy stir-fry wild boar with herbs
I’ve been loving this since I was a kid and I still do when I’m 27 years old! I just love the texture of how crispy the boar skin is and how chewy of its meat. It’s such a good feeling when chewing, don’t you think?? I am not so sure if other countries eat this type of meat? Let me know if you do. I’m curious..
The popular dish for wild boar is to make a spicy stir fry or ‘Pad Phed’ which means to put, as always, garlic and chilli then add on those basils and green pepper. If you eat everything all together in a bite, I guarantee you the hotness.
Spicy house chicken stir-fry with basils
What the hell is ‘House chicken or Thai chicken’?? Easy explanation would be ‘Uncaged or not-farmed chicken’. Pretty much like a wild chicken that find food and live on itself. Somehow, this type of chicken got a really nice firm texture to it. People also like to cook it in the noodle soup as written in the earlier post ‘Thai chicken noodle soup‘.
Basil stir-fry is one of the most common dishes in Thailand. When you go to any restaurant and not sure what to order, don’t hesitate to order this dish, ‘Phad Ga Prao’ which is a bit spicy stir-fry dish with basil as one of the main ingredients besides your choice of meat. Fast and easy!
Spicy Jungle soup (แกงป่า)
This guy, Bear Grylls, probably explains the dish LOLOL. How wild and jungle-ish it could get. Put many types of veggies such as, small eggplants, pea eggplants (I’m sure a lot of you don’t know these two), finger roots, Kaffir lime leaves, long green beans, chilli paste and of course, your choice of meat.
The good flavour of this dish is suppose to be intensive! It’s gotta be salty and spicy combined with all those flavours. You will also have to have the sounds of finishing drinking coca cola after the first spoon to prove that they make the dish real good , really 😀
TO BLEND IT OUT A LITTLE..
In Thailand or at least in my family, when we eat, we usually order different types / different tastes of food to give it a balance. Like, when we already have stir fry ,next dish we order soup. When we have spicy food already, we blend the meal out a little by ordering some sweet or not spicy dishes.
Besides the first 5 spicy dishes above. We got 3 more not spicy dishes for our dinner.
Stir-fry Phak whan and termite mushroom in oyster sauce
I love vegetable and I love mushroom soooo much so this dish was kinda perfect to give the meal some contrast. Besides the sauces, you’ll also get a natural sweetness from the Phak whan (same type of veggie from the 2nd dish above) and the termite mushroom.
It’s very common here in Thailand to make easy stir fry with just a few type of sauces. Sometimes, they even use just ‘Oyster sauce’ since it’s gotten the UMAMI taste itself already. What’s the umami taste???
Sweet and sour stir-fry chicken cashew nuts
Probably no need to say much here. I’ve seen this dish in almost every Thai / Chinese restaurants abroad. The famous sweet and sour stir fry with the crunch of cashew nuts everyone loves.
Fish cake (ทอดมันปลากราย)
This one is a little tricky. I couldn’t say it’s ‘NOT’ spicy because I’m sure some of my foreign friends would consider this dish ‘SPICY’ then I would ask ‘HOW?’ LOL
There’s this one type of fish ‘Spotted featherback’ if I don’t misunderstand the word due to the language barrier here. This type of fish, once you take out all the bones, put its meat in a plastic bag, season it a bit with fish sauce then you start doing a massage! Either you deep fry or boil the meat. It turn out to be this firm chewy fish cake that has such a unique texture to it.
Interesting, isn’t it??
WHAT A PERFECT SPICY BIRTHDAY DINNER!!
HOW MUCH DID THE MEAL COST?
8 delicious dishes using quality ingredients. 8 family members being happy together. It costed me only 1,250 THB ! Whaaattt?? ‘ So good with such a reasonable price. This place suddenly became one of my favourite restaurants ❤
****Would like to flavour up your day a bit just like I did?

The first location is in Kachanaburi Province. Luckily they just opened one here in Nakhon Pathom where I live.
The place offers AC room so no worries about mosquitoes flying around to get you annoyed.
