Hello Steemit, my name Luis I’m from Venezuela and I’m studying Fine Arts in Argentina.
After a long history of travels around the world I decided to come up here and develop myself in what I enjoy since I can remember.
At first, my idea of doing art wasn’t so clear, actually I was quite confused about what I would do in my life, and also I was under pressure because of typical people sayings "what will you eat if you do art?" "You’re an idealist!", "Plant your feet on the ground!" "Think that at some point you're going to have a family and you have to hold them up," "What will your children eat?" Etc. this things were affecting my decision, although I wasn’t aware of it.
A day in Cuenca, a beautiful city in Ecuador where I stopped a couple of months on my backpacking trip through Latin America, I started researching where I could develop my artistic skills and I got it, I decided it would be here in Argentina where luckily education is free and high quality level, at that moment started what I called "My trip to college," I did not come immediately, basically due to lack of resources and my desire to continue visiting new places among other things ... (It's a long and funny story maybe I will get back to it in the future).
Me in Cajas National Park – Cuenca, Ecuador.
After 2 years, many adventures, spiritual awakening and a lot kilometers driven, I’m here, ready to fulfill my goal, trying to make the best of the opportunities I have during my stay in La Plata.
What’s my proposal for steemit?
Now that you know me a bit better, I will tell you what I will share with you.
My intention is to show you those art projects I’ve already done and the ones I will do in future so you can share your opinions, critics and comments with me and we can build a bond of trust where all of us learn and help to grow each other to become better persons and artists.
I would also like to show projects created by other artists, basically @tepuyart aims to be a digital art gallery in order to create space for cultural exchange in the network.
Honestly, I’m really excited about this new social network; I think is a very interesting project that will change quite the way we handle on Internet today. Steemit comes to me at the right time thanks to my friend Gustavo the @handmade creator. Needless to say…
My first exhibition on Steemit.
I recently learned this printing technique called engraving, which basically is about carving pictures on wooden sheets, we call it matrix, which is then impregnated with ink and pressing it against paper, cloth, etc. with help of a press we get the printing.
There are also other ways of pressing the design (such as a spoon or even a closed can of any drink). Something very interesting this technique allows us is that you can use the matrix as often as you want, in theory it should last a lifetime if you give it a minimal care.
The woodcut is used in many cases for creating illustrations for the full planes that can be achieved and the hardness of the line generated by the carved with the gouge, (instrument for carving wood) which allows us to give to our art pieces a more illustrative feeling.
In my case I wanted to talk about the issue of personal identity, as you see the illustration has many in common with a fingerprint, this relationship seemed quite interesting to me since the fingerprint is forever like our face, especially in our current society where the body has been overrated. This aesthetic value we have given the body has made us lose interest in what is within the "package" It would be interesting to develop a society that questions who we really are from the inside out and which not only identifies with the visual but also with the spiritual.
From the point of view of the material that I used to carry out this project is also an intriguing relationship because as I said before the matrix in theory is also for life.
I hope you enjoyed my first post, in the next one I will share with you a bookbinding project I've been working on since few years ago.
I'm looking forward to read your advices and comments and if you have any questions about the process I will not hesitate to answer them.
Thank you very much!
Welcome on the steem boat Luis. Education is free in Argentina, fantastic- make the best out of it. Follow your dream and everything will unfold. I like your portrait. Do you know the German artist Käthe Kollwitz ? She has done really good graphics ( this technique is called Holzschnitt. Very expressive, powerfull with real message in a difficult time.
Here in UK unfortunately higher education becomes more and more expensive.
Good luck !
Hi @johano Yes in some countries education it's very expensive that's one of the reasons I chose Argentina to study.
Yes I have heard about her, she is one of the most recognized artists in critical realism. Thanks for adding some good content to my post also the name of the technique in spanish is 'xilografia'
