Jane: Well, what do you think about... when you're all alone?
Johnny: I think... I want to get out of this Rathole.
I want to get online. I NEED... a COMPUTER!
A while back I was all juiced up when I upgraded my Ancient Macbook Pro Laptop hard drive to 1 terabyte because I was always running out of space. The upgrade involved some weird adapter thing, in order to make a 'regular' M2/sata drive work with the mac book. I had to end up cutting away a bit of the macbooks plastic speaker housing to get the adapter to fit properly but to my huge amazement, it worked and for a while I had an awesome extra 500gb of hard drive space to play with.
That was basically up until two days ago until my computer crashed, which isn't out of the ordinary. But after force-rebooting the computer it came back with a Question mark inside a folder icon, which turns out there is no boot disk. This was the first time I ever saw that and after attempting some recovery options it was obvious that the computer wasn't working the way it should.
I thought maybe it was a case of something with my hack job coming loose inside so I opened it up. I had to drill open the aluminum case because the last screw didn't want to come out. I guess loctite wasn't such a great idea putting it back together the previous time, I thought I was doing an 'extra good' job. Once it was actually open, I inspected my prior handiwork and it really looked pretty solid and like everything should still be working as it was. I tried removing and putting it back but it wasn't working. As a last resort, I put the old original hard disk back in and to my semi-amazement, it started back up.
Thankfully I backed up my most important files but I did basically lose everything on that hard disk for like the past 10 months, I don't think anybody likes that feeling of losing things even if they are just 'digital' files. I will still try and do some recovery on that disk but it doesn't seem to be very likely.
At the very least I guess I have a new computer to look forward to soon enough if I can snag one, something with some performance but something used and in my budget. I have been wishing for an upgrade for a while now, this one is over a decade old at this point and certainly a bit of a performance enhancement would be valuable as well. Not to mention it seems like this one is getting increasingly unwieldy, not just with it crashing but of course software updates don't really work that well on such an ancient machine and sometimes it's good to have those.
I even had a bunch of photos from this upgrade process, perhaps I will continue this post at a later date but my catalog information is stuff that got lost on that hard disk and I'm not going to bother messing around trying to rebuild that until I know I am on a solid workspace. It's likely though I will continue my cross Canada trekking series though, it's about time to finally wrap that up 😂
In summation, the loss of my previous hard drive left me a bit shook and while I am not entirely... computerless it's become super apparent it's time for a new one, it's time for a lot of new stuff but that's a story for another day.
what bad news the loss of your hard drive and with it also part of your work so I hope you can solve this problem soon and have a new computer
I know right... it was working pretty okay for a while I really did my best to work it to it's potential but I guess it's just "that time" 🤓 TO MOVE ON 😮😉
well yes it is a good time to have a new one and yes it is possible with much more power on the hard drive and have more potential to carry out your daily activities
I hope you can solve the problem with the hard drive and recover some of your files. Just as being able to buy a new computer would be a good option
Thanks @ferod23 I had high hopes but they are slowly dwindling down as the drive doesn't seem to be coming back no matter what, I have tried windows, mac and ubuntu and nothing seems to be able to read the disk, I think I will likely just cut my losses and claim a warranty which will mean sending this one away and just accepting what needs to be accepted. A new computer would be beneficial, thanks for your comment 😎
It was very interesting to read your adventure of trying to upgrade your computer and how you took the loss of your files. It has seemed very brave your attitude to see the positive side and look for a new opportunity to upgrade. Best regards my friend!

Losing digital files can be quite hurtful. I have been there several times but always fall into the same problem over and over again. Keeping a backup is really needed actually, but I always can't have my backup drive yet.
at least your MacBook could still be used at the moment. : )
For sure it's not always exactly possible depending on the situation. On top of the new computer I guess I'll have to consider some better backup options going forward. I am thankful by my gracces I did a photo backup and video backup a week before it happened, otherwise I would be more upset most likely! Keep those files safe my friend 🙂
😮😊😂👍 Whoa! pretty intense! I think Keanu is SERIOUS!! :P
but doh! it sucks to lose a drive.. that's happened to me before too..
yea.. it just gives u an excuse to get a new system now! :)
Haha I love that ridiculous clip of Keanu, he sums up the need quite well. In the movie he is suffering from memory problems as well. Ah yes, those memory storage problems 😤
I'm sorry to hear about your hard drive crash, but it's great to hear that you were able to recover your most important files. And even though you lost some data, it sounds like this is an opportunity for you to upgrade to a new computer. I hope you find a great one that meets your needs and budget.
In the meantime, I'm sure you're feeling a bit shaken up, but try to stay positive. This is a chance for a fresh start, and I'm sure you'll be able to rebuild your catalog information and continue your cross-Canada trekking series.
