Almost a Fine Art Forger

Hitherto unknown paintings by Paul Gauguin and Jacque-Louis David discovered in pile of old leftover art in corner of basement!

Just kidding. I painted these myself, on canvas board with oil paints. They were fairly large too, and took much longer than usual.

They were commissioned by an ad agency in Hong Kong on behalf of Cathay Pacific, to advertise their Marco Polo class seats, back in 1995. Don't know if they still look like this, probably not but I wouldn't know as they didn't even offer me free tickets. :)

As you probably noticed, these are scanned from printed copies, which is all I have left, I had to give the originals to the ad agency. At the time someone told me I could have made millions as a fine art forger. All you need is the ability to be an artistic chameleon, and some technical tricks like how to age the art in an oven, and what materials to use.
Maybe, but then they usually end up in prison... :)

Thanks for watching!

My dad was a copywriter, he would sometimes work with artists like yourself and their "forgeries". I'm pretty sure none of them was better than you. I particularly like theJacques-Louis David, Gauguin is not so much to my taste.

Trust me, I'm a doctor.

Thanks! Yes that's exactly my preference too, David, Ingres, people like that. Gauguin I feel was overrated, he was just first with an unusual style. He seems a bit of a racist colonialist dick actually... :)

Hah, very cool! That's a fun little ad campaign, but you definitely deserved a complimentary first class ticket.

Yes! That's what I said. I've never flown first class. :)

Wow, very nice work. Must have sucked to have to give the originals away :( At least I hope they paid you well :)

Yeah, back in those days I was making lots of money. At my peak about 10,000 usd a month tax free. (Now? Can't even afford a new phone...)
I was a freelancing commercial illustrator in Hong Kong, doing 100 hour weeks 50 weeks a year... but those days are long since gone now, due to several things: Photoshop and stock images killed the illustration business all over the world, and it was double killed for all those expats in Hong Kong at the time when the Chinese took the place back 1997. Most of them left as soon as they could, I followed soon after as my business dried up. Oh well, nothing good lasts for very long. :)

My respect for forgeries have gone up a bit now. ;) Is that screen in both images a certain product, or is it just a design you came up with?

It's part of the Marco Polo experience, or was back then anyway. Cathay Pacific marketing their first class, showing the chair with the screen. And in the top example, also showing a blanket, and some food and drinks and headphones...

This is really cool. I've always liked Gauguin.

You really are top at what you do @stahlberg.... You are so good in all kinds of medium, digital painting, acrylic painting etc etc. Gosh...

Thank you!! :D :D

Whoa! Amazing, @stahlberg. So skilled and talented!
I would love to read step by step tutorials made by you to learn from you :)
All the best,
Klaudia

Beautiful work. It's a pitty that you dont have more photos.
As for art forgery, I remember something about a guy who forged many paintings but he got caught when he didn't clean his brush well enough :P He left traces of modern paint on it. Plus many of the old paints are hard to get by as many are very toxic, like Van Gogh's yellow. :D
If I'm wroung about any of this please correct me, it's just a vague memory :)

Thank you!
lol I wouldn't know about the technical details on what paint to use, I'm sure you're right, because I do know they used a lot of different paints back then that were super-expensive, and are today made really cheaply, less toxic and even stronger colors. :)
