Digital portrait of Angelika Kauffmann (process inside)

in #art7 years ago

As I wrote in some of my previous posts, in these last days I'm trying to improve my skills using my new pen tablet (the Wacom Intuos Pro Paper Edition) and photoshop, so I decided to work on a portrait of the painter Angelika Kauffmann.

I used my own illustrative style, the same style that I use when I paint in the "traditional" way, so it's not a "realistic" portrait of Angelika, but just my personal version ^_^

At first, a brief bio of Angelika Kauffmann:

Born in the 1741, she was a swiss painter with an excellent career in Rome and London. She used a neoclassical style in her paintings and, even if she's best known as hystory painter, she was also a great portraitist. She's  important for the history of women in art also because she was one of the 2 women (the other was Mary Moser) founding members of the Royal Academy in London (during the 1768). A curiosity: even if she was a founding members of the Royal Academy, as woman she couldn't attend to the meetings and the dinner of the Academy. You can read more about it here

For this digital drawing I started from a fast sketch I did using a simple black pencil. I used the pencil sketch as a basis  to draw the first "ink" sketch with the Intuos Pro Paper edition. As you can see in the following pics, I used a simple sheet of paper in A5 size over the tablet and the specific pen and I saved the sketch on Inkspace before to work on it using photoshop.

When I opened the file on Photoshop,  I started to "explore" brushes and tools ^_^ It was long (about 3 hours), but I had fun because I tryed different things like smudge, different opacity levels, different brushes of different measures. To learn something new is always a pleasure for me, especially if it's a new tecniques that I can use to express myself ^_^

At the end, I used 5 different layers to create this image and even if it's not perfect, I have to say that I'm satisfied ^_^

I hope you like it!

Night night to everyone!

Great illustration, I'm also on my way to learning digital painting, so far I only sketch by hand. How much are pen tablets anyway?

I bought the wacom Intuos Pro Paper Edition size M because it also captures the sketch made by hand, but there are many different kind of wacom pen tablets in different size and different price, you can see here: http://www.wacom.com/en-us/products/pen-tablets

Realy nice @silviabeneforti !!
Do you only use digital painting for your drawings.

Usually I use oil colors for my paintings and chalk pastels pencils for drawings, but I bought a pen tablet and so I'm learning how to use it for some illustration ;)

I actually want to buy pen tablet "wacom", But usually i use aquarelle pencils.
i will post some of my projects sooner,

I love watching other people’s art process❤️

Me too !!! ^_^ ❤️

Bellissimo lavoro Silvia! Complimenti e buon'anno! (;

Grazieeee!!! Continuo a preferire i colori a olio, ma imparando ad usare la tavoletta grafica posso fare "aggiustamenti" interessanti alle illustrazioni ^_^

Io penso che sia una ferramenta in più per lavorare, però sicuramente non'è la stessa cosa (sensazione) come dipingere con il pennello e tinta! (;

very unique style of art ..really like the concept

Thanks so much, @rambai ^_^

Very nice Silvia-- interesting to see a bit of the process of getting from paper to digital format.

It's really a new adventure for me, but it's nice to see something like this from paper to digital, really intrigued (even if I can't wait to work again with my oil colors ^_^).

Wow.. they are a wonderful, congratulations. nice post. :)

You are going to have so much fun with your new drawing and colouring 'materials' Silvia. Your first image here is so wistfuly beautiful.

Way back in the 90s, I was drawing/painting camellias in water, in a landscape. My partner at that time was an innovative programmer and encouraged me to use his Amiga computer, one of the first PCs to have a graphics program.

The idea was to do my 'thumbnails' for other paintings on the computer. However they became more like artworks in their own right. Being able to change colours with this software in a split second was 'mind-blowing.'

It didn't have a pencil though ~ And the initial drawings were done using a mouse. Can you imagine?

I look forward to seeing where your exploring takes you. 🦋

Isn't it interesting how the creation seems to take on a life of it's own. Sometimes when you finish, you almost wonder, did I do that!?!

The wonder of inspiration :-)
