It's been another glorious day here in Queenstown, New Zealand and another perfect day for painting outdoors (en plein air).
I gathered up my paints, brushes and pochade box easel and headed down to the lake front to paint the view.
This is the art work I have painted today. In this blog post I'll show you how I created this art work.
Spring Morning, Lake Wakatipu, 200mm x 330mm, oil on canvas panel, painted en plein air.
There is nothing like painting outdoors and if you're a studio painter like me it's great to get outside and paint. You learn so much from painting outside and for me I feel plein air painting has improved my work dramatically.
This was the view I painted today which looks towards the Remarkables mountains and Kelvin Heights.
I started off by sketching the scene loosely on a canvas panel I had prepared earlier.
I always start by painting the sky so I can gauge the tonality of the rest of my painting from this. After that I immediately paint my shadows. Once I have my dark tones established it doesn't matter if the light changes.
Later on as I was painting the light changed and there were more highlights on the Remarkables Mountains. It didn't matter that the light had changed as I had my dark tones established.
After establishing my dark tones I paint the highlights of the trees. I use my most saturated colour in the foreground to achieve atmospheric depth in my painting.
This photo was taken a couple of hours later and you can see how the light has changed especially as the mountains are now bathed in sunlight.
My finished painting.
