My Husband Wanted A Tree House For His Man Cave
14 x 11 inches, mixed media paper, pen and ink, watercolor and gouache, July 2017
My dream home since 1973 after I read J.R.R. Tolkien's book "The Hobbit," has been to live in an underground home like a Hobbit. Underground homes are protected from extreme weather and looters. My husband told me be sure you check with the county's floodplain maps. I'm an Oregonian, it rains a lot in my state, we are born knowing where the high water flow. Plus most states won't allow building on floodplains, unless they are corrupt.
I will be drawing up an interior design of the inside of my dream Hobbit hole along with the interior of my greenhouse (hydroponic units included), how I will dispose of waste without polluting, alternative energy units, a hydroelectric generator and wind turbine. I've been reading about alternative energy and getting off the food and energy grid for years. I don't know which structural design I will go with. Definitely not tires, too toxic, there are a lot of great ideas using cement or dirt so I will be checking out structural designs using these two elements. Also using passive solar heat, human, and animal waste for a methane type generator to keep the greenhouse and home warm during the winter.
So i got me another Hobbit fan....MUAH!
Hug right back, Hobbits unite!
Yhieeeehoooo!
Waiting for the Elfs story-line eagerly from the movie series......
To tell you the truth, I would rather hangout with the dwarfs, elves are kindof stuckup...but anymore story lines regarding the beginning of middle earth. I read this book when I was a teenager and it felt like I was reading the Christian bible...lololol
But Elves are so cute!!!!
Dwarfs very obstinate....But Hobbits awesome...
I never read any of those books but have seen Lord of the Rings and The Hobbits like 50 times in total!
I was grounded to my bedroom a lot and the hobbit, lord of the rings saved my sanity. I learned I could go anywhere in the universe with a good book ;-). You should read the original version of the Hobbit, it was my favorite as a kid because the war scenes were boring lololol
hahahahaha!
I will look for a hard copy, i will be distracted if i download an e-copy
Amazing work as always! That is an awesome tree house!!
Really interesting project! I come from a structural engineering, architecture and energy background so will stay tuned to see this progress.
Best of luck with your endeavors, with so many innovative and exciting areas of building to explore I'm sure you'll do great!!
Thank you @balditron, it's fun to combine my two favorite hobbies! I am not an engineer but I will definitely hire one to help me put together my electrical grids.
Good ideas to help the world and reduce our impact. Reddust as always great words and drawing
Besides trying to make a small footprint, underground homes are cool!
Yes for example to avoid the hot of outside
Where I come from it gets freezing cold in the winter and hot with forest fires in the summer. The Pacific Northwest forests because before governments when woods were wild and free would have huge patches of forest burn every year. We've suppressed forest fires now for at least 100 years. So when we do have burns they blow up because of all the dead bracken and trees haven't burned for many, many years. Also forest fires killed diseases and our trees are riddled with disease from lack of seasonal burns.
Sooooo, an underground home with the right ventilation would be protected from forest fires as well.
Off course reddust here in my country is not a real problem but the weather is warm almost all year long temperature is commonly 28 °C and a underground home is a lovely solution
Yeah, an underground home's temperature is when buried under at least 12 feet of dirt does not change even if it's in the hot desert.
Useful graphic
Hobbit homes and tree houses totally appeal to me on different levels. I love the idea of safety and security in a hobbit home, ceiling clearance has to be 6'4" to accommodate me, the ground keeping you both warm and cool.
The freedom of a true house, like the one in your drawing, would make me feel as tho I were aboard a sailing ship. Both ideas are appealing to me.
Yeah the underground home's ceilings have to be at least 8ft high because most of the men in my family are over 6 foot tall and the women in my family are 5'7 or taller. We are from the tall hobbit clan ... lolol
I would like to go back to the tradition where multi generations families live together again and small villages of craft people and gardeners. I won't be flipping this home once it's built ;-)
nice pos
This is also my dream kind of house- maybe it is an artist thing or spending too much time in Tolkien country.
One can never spend too much time hanging out in Middle Earth! Hopefully with enough elbow-grease our dreams will come true! <3
looking forward to see the interieur you gonna choose! looks like fun. Great work as always reddust!

@reddust, that's so cool. I hear from hobbits I know that it's really quite cozy. ;) What a fun project!
Loved the positivity it has really this is one of the best art work.
I love this painting @reddust!! I think this one might be my favourite. :) I love the colours and the whole idea of the painting but I particularly like the flowers, especially the bluebells at the front and you have done an excellent job of the water and reflections. Really stunning work my friend!! I wish I could live there! :)
Love following the process posts and seeing it all come together bit by bit. :)
Have a wonderful day!!
Thank you so for sharing this. Inspirational post for my second treehouse design. Been looking alternative energy and getting off the food and energy grid too!!
