"Breath of the desert"

in #art6 years ago

Almost two decades ago, in 1995, the community was created by D. A. ST. Arteam: sculptor Danae Stratou, industrial designer and architect Alexandra Stratou, and architect Stella Konstantinidis. And they United to create an "epic" project of landscape design (or rather, land art) in the desert near the Red sea in Egypt. The project was completed by March 1997.

The project covers an area of more than one hundred thousand square meters (360 by 300 meters). Consists of two interconnected spirals with a single starting point. One spiral is 89 cones, the other spiral is 89 cone-shaped recesses. Diameter and height-depth increases as you move away from the center. The cone-shaped form is chosen as a starting point, as it is a natural form of sand as a material.

To create spirals it was necessary to move 8000 cubic meters of soil (sand). In the center of the building is a vessel with a diameter of 30 meters in the form of the English letter W, filled with water. That is, in the middle is a tiny island at the level of the horizon.
The project works on two levels of vision: from the top as a visual image, and from the ground, if you go in a spiral, as a physical experiment.

After 18 years, it is still visible from space. Time and wind have no power over it.
The object itself is a combination of positive and negative matters, it is a symbol of infinity and ruthlessness of time. The girls wanted to show an illustration of his current. It is time here the main author. On cones it always leaves its marks, it destroys and consumes, like everything else on Earth. "Breath of the desert" is a device for measuring time, a kind of clock set in the Egyptian Sahara.

It was assumed that the object will stand no more than two years. But the monument is still standing, despite the harsh climatic conditions. It is clearly visible even from space.
