Caught on film
Today, I'm showing you the process of how I created 'Snap', an illustration for Chapter Fourteen of Doug Karr's fascinating novel Dwelling.
Standing on a stoop on Eldridge Street with her Mamiya RB67 balanced on her knee. The sun dissipating into a wash of thick red lentil soup above.

The process of creating 'Snap'
The image of the camera was sketched out in pencil, masking fluid was applied to areas and left to dry. Then layers of ink and water were added with a brush to create areas of tone. The lines and details were added using a dip pen and drawing ink.
"OK." he had finally said. "You can take my picture."

She had opened her metallic viewfinder and looked down at an upside-down Rube on the focusing screen. His chest grew as he stared down the barrel, the ground glass dividing his physique into to two dichotomous parts. She pulled the trigger.
Snap.

I love this drawing! You're rendering of the Mamiya is wondrous and the reflection of Rube in the glass of the lens is an amazing touch! The masking liquid is a great revelation. I want to try mucking around with some if I ever get back to drawing. I can see why Mioko would cherish this camera. Pure awesomeness!
I assumed you had a Mamiya at some point (or coveted one), and that is how it found its way to being Mioko's camera.

Thanks @opheliapoe- glad you like it :D
Fantastic! I never work in ink, at least the kind of ink you are using. Sumi ink, yes, but not sure if they are the same thing XD
I mainly use 3 different black drawing inks- 1 is a waterproof ink,1 is a non-waterproof ink, and 1 is an acrylic based ink- is use that mainly for adding very dark blacks that have a shine to the surface..
This is really nicely done! I like it ! :-)
Love the little gifss that show you working on this. Shows your precision. Gorgeous output!
