Good afternoon, dear needlewomen. Today I want to talk about Ukrainian traditions. In Ukrainian culture there are many traditions and symbols that are used up to now. One of these symbols is an embroidered towel, it is an integral part of our culture, many legends have been invented about it, which have reached our time.
There is a great variety of patterns, each pattern has its own meaning and purpose. Towel is used both in ordinary life, for example, they decorate icons, and in solemn events. At weddings several types of towels are used.
One towel is used for the icon, which parents bless the newlyweds; on the other lay a wedding loaf; on the third towel the young become during the wedding; one more pair of hands to the young so that the couple spent a lifetime together.
Embroidery of a towel uses flower ornaments, pairs of pigeons or swans, it symbolizes a happy marriage, loyalty and love. Towel under the feet is embroidered with geometric figures.
Let such a towel, be a companion of your life.
I wish everyone good luck and prosperity.

The geometric patterns are stunning. And the flowers are beautiful, especially the one in your very first picture that made it look like it the flowers are in a basket! What a great tradition to have!
Thank you. The first towel is not finished yet, but I like it more than anyone else.
Thanks for sharing that beautiful Ukrainian history with us here. The towels are really pretty, the designs show the painstaking efforts put in to make them. I've stuff like that here in Nigeria and I never really gave second thoughts to where and how they are made. Through you I also got to know what it symbolizes. I'll be sure to purchase one when I see one as I want a happy marriage with loyalty and love. Happy needleworkmonday!
Thank you for such a wonderful comment. I'm glad that I was able to give interesting information. If there was an opportunity, I would have embroidered a beautiful towel and gave it to you.
When you say "towel under the feet" does that mean the bride and groom actually stand on it? All the designs are so beautiful, and so are the colors! I love that first towel with the deep purple pansies--and what amazing detail there is on the roses!!
Thank you for your attention to my work. The first towel is not finished yet, I'll soon finish it. Yes, we have such a tradition - the newlyweds stand with their feet on the towel during the wedding ceremony. Who of the newlyweds will be the first to go to the towel and that will be the main thing in the family (this is certainly a joke, but there is some truth).
Oh wow! Why do they stand on the towel during the ceremony? What do they do with it afterward? Does it become a keepsake for them?
Such a tradition in Ukraine, especially at the feet of embroidering a towel and after the wedding retain their whole life, then there will be happiness in the family.
Thank you @libriya for sharing these lovely traditions with us. I learn something new every week by reading everyone’s posts! The colors and designs on these towels are so beautiful!
Many thanks @crosheille. I'm happy to share everything that is interesting and can help someone my ideas.
