Drawing a realistic Owl.

in #art7 years ago (edited)

Hi Steemit friends! I want to share with you a new drawing which is a realistic drawing of a great horned Owl. As Owls are one of my favourite birds of prey, I wanted to draw it better than my previous Owl drawing which I made few months ago.So, I decided to draw it by adding more details. I completed this drawing today using graphite pencils.

Drawing duration : 8 hours.

The materials :

Bristol smooth paper A4.
HB, 2B, 4B, 6B and a 8B pencil.
Blending stumps.
Pencil eraser.

The process :

I started with the outlines which I drew using a HB pencil.

Then I drew the eyes by adding dark outlines and shading on the darker parts using a 6B pencil. I added shading on the lighter part of the eye using a 2B pencil. After the shading, I blended the graphite using a blending stump.

After adding the shading on the eyes, I started working on the beak using a 2B and a 4B pencil. I also started adding shading underneath and above the eyes using sharp strokes of HB and a 2B pencil on the light areas and 4B on the darker areas. After adding the shading, I blended it.

Using the same method, I completed the shading on the other side.

After shading most of the details of the face, I started working on the top part of the head starting from the upper part of the beak. Using a 4B pencil, I made the layer of dark shading in a speckled pattern and blended between them using a blending stump.

After adding dark details extending above the eyes to the ears using a 4B and a 6B pencil, I started adding shading to the outer parts of the face using 2B and a 4B pencil. Then I blended it.

After shading the details of the face and the head, I started adding layers of the speckled pattern again using a 2B and a 4B pencil. Then I blended it.

Using the same method of shading on the remaining areas, I completed the drawing.

Here's a gif of the drawing process :

Hope you like it.
Thanks for watching.

These are really good shadings! Also loved the gif with the evolution at the end :)

Thank you.

Wow, really beautiful drawing. Owls are so cool. I love the detail you put in to the feathers. My only constructive criticism is I would love to see even more range of contrast here - the whole thing feels a little flat, particularly around the eyes where I am not getting the impression of a spherical object but rather a flat one. Please understand I am only offering up this comment in a friendly spirit - I love your drawing and you are obviously a talented artist. Thank you very much for sharing the process pics and gif, really enjoyed those.
