Would you like to see dozens of painters creating their art in beautiful surroundings? So would I, and so I did!
This past Saturday in the quaint town of Ascona Switzerland on Lago Maggiore just a few kilometers from the Italian border I attended:
Pittori in Piazza Ascona
On a beautiful day, in these surroundings, does inspiration come more easily?
On Saturday July the 15th the 52nd edition of the art show/competition "Pittori in Piazza" could not have had a better day!
As in previous years, many artists from all over Europe showed their talent and skill as they created works of art in the beautiful surroundings of Ascona.
The painting competition began at 9 a.m. in the streets and on the lakeside of Ascona. From 5 to 11 p.m. all the paintings were exhibited at the Piazzale Elvezia and at 6 p.m the best five were awarded prizes between $300 and $700 by a selected jury.
It Was Great to See so Many Artists In One Beautiful Place!
What a great opportunity for all of these artists to meet together!
The artists also "spilled" over into the narrow lane ways of the town in order to find their preferred subject!
This year, for the first time, artists also displayed their crafts, carvings and jewellery!
Artists of the musical kind also made an appearance lead by a very animated conductor!
One last look at Lago Maggiore before saying goodbye!
What do You Think?
- Would you delight in strolling in these surroundings and seeing the artists at work?
- If you're an artist would you enjoy being there?
- Would you find it too difficult to paint with all of the tourists milling about?
I hope that you enjoyed this article about a "Place That Inspires Artists to Show And Create!"

It really was an enchanting place ....a totally inspiring atmosphere where one would just feel the artistic inspirations flowing and throbbing in one's veins....too bad I'm not an artist, ( but I am at heart )...
Beautiful soul-soothing pictures!💕 💞 💓 💗 💖 Who won't love to be in such picturesque surroundings with such lovely, creative and appreciative people?😇
IMO, it's such quiet & natural settings that pacifies your mind and only calm minds can concentrate, innovate or create something beautiful 🎨. As Stephen Gardiner puts it:
Gordon Lightfoot had rightly said:
So not only such locations help artists creating a better art but it also helps the visitors grasp and appreciate them better; esp. when they can make the connection between the artists' expression and how Nature itself expresses it; giving some meaning to the dutch painter Piet Mondrian's musings:
Looks like many artists participated in it. Would love to see the pictures of any of those winning artists in case you have got it🤓 😎. Really enjoyed this awesome journey to the lake side of Ascona. Thank you for regularly bringing in every piece of Switzerland to me.👌👌👌

Wow @xyzashu quoting Gordon Lightfoot! Is he a well known artist in India or have you lived abroad?
Sorry to say that I left before the winners were announced and an internet search did not turn up an article showing the winners!
If I were one of them I'd definitely enjoy it being there
would I manage to paint despite the crowd - yes
we usually have our own momentum and in my case once I start nothing can break it
not even a hungry hubby
I'd finish when I want to
and beside any water area with so many other painters would feel like "home"
Your powers of concentration are to be lauded!
No, I haven't ever had the privilege to see Gordon Lightfoot live 😔 but many popular bands and artists keep traveling to India for their performance.
In fact, a small place called Rishikesh on the banks of river Ganges is still famous for Beatles visiting there some 50 years back. Bryan Adams, Metallica, Deep Purple and many others have performed in India in multiple cities. However, I never got any opportunity to see any of them live ☹️. Once I tried to go for Bryan Adams concert but it was a struggle to secure its ticket and I couldn't. However none of them are popular with most people here but due to the large population even a small percentage of fans constitute a big number. 🙂
Fortunately, my city is a tourist destination and several international tourists flock here. So sometimes in their company, I get the opportunity to enjoy music of all kinds. 😊

What an amazing event! I just do regret I haven't been there phisically! As far as I'm concerned I always like to see an artist at work, but when someone is looking at me there's a little bit of tension and my works seems to be worse than usual :D
I know what you mean about being watched while you're working! It can make you nervous!
You work in a very transparent field :D
True!
I am always amazed, and also a bit jealous, how a artist painter can turn a blanc canvas into something that is worth looking at. Especially some pieces in your post are so detailed and also painted in a uniform scale. I can watch hours to some paintings discovering new details.
When I was a child I used to watch Bob Ross paintint on television. My mom says I was so silent and impressed that this was even better than letting me watch cartoons. Even when I see an old show of Bob Ross now I still like to watch it.
I can imagine that you had a great time watching all these artists make their one masterpieces. The one even better than the other.
Watching painters doing their work, a beautiful view, nice weather, a cold refreshing drink.. Life couldn't get any better!
Thanks for your lovely comment and reminiscing. I also remember being amazed with how easy Bob Ross made painting look!
Great photos!
It really wonder to paint reality by looking around.
At this moment we realize how complex the life is, even in the simplest things.
Thanks for sharing! Upvote and resteem
Thanks a lot!
I could only imagine what it would be like to stand there and doodle, whilst staring at those waters and mountains, not sure how much brush to canvas Id have though, I tend to get lost in beauty like that most times 😍
Great post yet again kind sir!
I like your reasoning on the third question. I was thinking the same thing!
Wonderful presentation as always, my dear brother. While scrolling down I felt like I was part of the event, it felt like I was seeing the event being present there. So beautiful surroundings, views and equally beautiful way presented.
Q: Would you delight in strolling in these surroundings and seeing the artists at work?
A: Absolutely.
Q: If you're an artist would you enjoy being there?
A: Love to be there and enjoy doing my art along with the energy of hundreds of other artists like me.
Q: Would you find it too difficult to paint with all of the tourists milling about?
A: Not at all.
I know that you do computer art. That was one type of artist that I didn't see there. Maybe next year!
Ha hahaa. I did canvas painting back in India, that's why your presentation refresh my older memories. I used to draw nature around me. Due to faster life here in Canada I didn't get time for it and all lost back in India.
A very beautiful spot @kus-knee! As I recall, quite a few of Denmark's "golden age" painters (1850-1910) would paint here during the winters... as Denmark was too dark, cold and miserable. My elderly auntie had a few such paintings at her house... interesting to see how it still attracts, although definitely not surprising.
I had forgotten that you had a connection with Ticino. You used to travel with your car on the train through the tunnel to that area correct? It seems that your auntie had a great impact on you and in a good way!
This is really a heavenly place! I'm delighted with your photos. These photos are what my heart needs! Thank you!
Wow thanks so much!
great place and nice art, there.
painters along the shores of Lugano lake too? I have been there a few times and I remember art shows...
We were only missing the great artist Paolo Beneforti!
too kind of you as always, Dog ;)
i have seen one of this kind of place with lots of painter making their painting. it is nice to just sit and see them doing their art, watching live art making while enjoying the scenery. what could be better?
Yes it was really cool. I hope that I didn't bother them to much with my questions!
I wonder how they stand for that long? Must be exhausting right?
You make a good point: It was over 30 degrees as well!
I would love to go there, though I'm not a painter, nor real artist. Just an amateur. The passers-by would not bother me while I'm painting, I'd rather talk to them :))) Painting competition? :))) Seems to be funny! How can they decide who's the best? Here the participation is important to me, not the prize. I paint which is exactly in my soul, not the things I see with my physical eyes.
Thanks for your thought. I really enjoyed your fractal designs!
Have you ever seen 4D fractals? https://steemit.com/art/@kalemandra/mandelbulber-fantasy-series-fossils-and-skeletons
Wow! Cool work @kus-knee! I would enjoy being strolling there! I think they can abstract and do not pay attention to the tourists!
To paint like that you need to get into the "zone" so perhaps you're right and they don't notice the other people!
@kus-knee - My wife and I would love to stroll and keep looking at amazing artwork the whole day. We strolled in Venice, along the grand canal for 6 hours, watching as various artists exhibited and produced their masterpieces. The Ascona location looks even more picturesque and as you have pointed out, inspiration does not come much more easily than that!. Lake Maggiore looks amazing. Thanks for sharing. Upvoted and followed you.
I am more into wildlife and travel (having stepped back from the rut of being a successful executive), I continued my observations today of nuggets of wisdom from wildlife and wrote a blog 'Dueling Duo - How impalas manage conflict' with my wildlife photos and musings with a twist. I request you to take a look at it when you have time. Your comments, would be an encouragement and incentive for me to make better blogs. Thanks
Glad to read about your experience in Venice. Nice to read that you've re-focused from the life of and executive to that of a "wild " man!
I think inspiration comes when we are closer to the nature. On the lakeside and with such a landscape in front of them I think quite inspired by the colors of the sky and the lake. I know that inspiration is coming easier from the nature from my own experience so whenever I am not sure what to write about I take a walk through the beauty of the nature and that is when the light turns on for me. I believe that even with the tourists milling about it was not difficult for them. When you see happy people around you you are energized by their happiness.
You are right about being with happy people!
Wow, talk about an artist's hub! That's amazing. Nice shots too! Did you purchase any art?
As for your questions, I'd LOVE to walk around an event like that! But like you mentioned, I think artists might find it distracting so maybe I would love it but also feel guilty? Then again, these guys signed up for this event -they knew what the conditions would be like. Maybe they're into that? I can't speak to what I would feel like as an actual artist though because I just don't have the capacity to create anything as amazing as these works of art.
Thanks for bringing us along to the show!
You're photos are works of art!
ah that's so kind! It's not art like THIS
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Your post making interaction and sharing your VP to all who participate. Keep it up. God bless.
It's a pleasure interacting with other Steemers and to be able to share the wealth is so nice!
Thank you! :)
Now that looks like fun. That's the kind of scenery you see in movies, Old Dog.
I guess that my life is an Old Movie! How fitting!
I love this! It is amazing fun to see art come to life. When there are art festivals (for selling), I see the people who are casually working on one of their art pieces always gather a crowd. But occasionally there's the person who becomes so involved with the art that they have their entire focus on the art and forget to sell :-)
My art is not drawing and painting and I can hardly imagine passing up the opportunity to attend this event.
If I were painting, and if I went to compete, I would have to spill out away from the crowd or else I would spend all my time visiting with everyone who came near.
You bring up some good points. I spoke to several of the artists as I admired their work but I imagine that if everyone talked to them they'd get nothing done!
A lot of people can work and talk. Or reply, then paint, while they wait for your response. I just don't happen to be one of those people.
I could however come up with at least 3 applications to any slight enquiry for artistic suggestions, solve your nephew's reading quandary, and suggest improvements to your diet.
But
I would not be painting at the same time ;-)
ps have you checked your steemit.chat lately? I left a poorly shot, "head in the clouds" photo there. I don't have permission from the artist to share it widely.
How beautiful are the pictures and such a wonderful time enjoyed I am trying to keep my jealousy under control here as I would love to experience this in person. Another creative article. Thanks a million.
Thanks you so much for your kind words!
looks like a highly inspirational place
It is one of my favorite spots in this area!
What an excellent place to paint and show off one's work! I would be distracted by all the tourists if I was working there but some people must get a rush from the spectators looking on!
I can understand what your reaction would be. I guess being observed in admiration is far different than being observed with a view to criticizing!
I think are great pictures @kus! 41k steem power is good! And greeting from Lugano :)
Are you back in Lugano at the moment?
I like your posts a lot, I follow you and I always vote for you, added on steemvoter!
Oh My God! It would b a wonderful delight to be at such a beautiful place putting the beauty of your mind on paper adding life in it using colors <3 I know the amazing feeling when you meet people who are just like you. I wish could display my crafts and handmade jewellery there.
It would have been a treat to meet you there in Ascona!
what a stunning stunning location, and some very talented artists doing what they love. Personally I would feel to "watched" to paint that way and it would take away the relaxing aspect but that's just for me.
Its a great way for artists to showcase their work in progress:)
It would be difficult for me to work while being watched as well. However being watched by an appreciative eye is much easier than being watched by a critical one.
That is a really cool idea. Its a beautiful place ans the pictures are great, I guess lots of artists made great paintings and I bet it was really hard for the judges. Thanks for sharing
Yes, I didn't stay for the prize announcement and I couldn't find any info on who won.
Aww that's too bad, well at least you were able to be part of the experience
Street artists, many times they are so good,.. Nice they could show there work and let others ee how they make such nice paintings / drawings !!
Yes it was great to have been there!
Wow, this is awesome! I think every city should have this kind of competition for anyone. That would be great!
And to answer your questions @kus-knee, yes, I'd love to watch these artists paint and see the results. If I were an artist, I'd definitely have a hard time painting with all the tourists staring at my work, haha!
It is a very cool competition!
Hmmm... The Old Dog is sniffing nice art and collecting souvenirs...
True!
Wow...all the pics are beautiful...specially the last one @kus-knee.
Thanks a lot!
Nice.. i cant paint.. only make pictures.. see my holiday pics
Photography is also an art!
I agree. Sometimes a photo with my smart phone Can be Good but not compared with real photographers.. did you see my holiday Posts?
What did you enjoy the most?
The atmosphere and being with my family to share it with them!
Ahh seems and sounds like paradise :) I wish I could witness something like this as well one day!
Most likely one day you shall!
One last look at Lago Maggiore and it's already in the past.
Hey, it should be pretty fun to watch artists competing with each other.
Yes it was a great experience!
Amazing place! I never knew it existed but certainly will be on my list to visit from now! Thanks
It is a beautiful town!
Sounds like a great time for both the artists and the bystanders. Would've loved to be there (not as an artist though, I'm horrible at painting)
You would have enjoyed it I'm sure!
This reminds me of walking through Venice and seeing all the artists huddled in the shade painting the canals! I would love to see what the finished products looked like.
Yes I didn't see the finished product because we left after lunch.
It's so cool to see how professionals create their paintings. It's a real gift and talent.
You're right!
Wow, amazing shots and story! thanks for sharing the adventure with us @kus-knee
