Digital Art Contest Entry- Finished

Some cute dragons for the Digital Art Contest by @gmuxx. The theme is fantasy.

I decided to finish 3 of my favorite designs for the contest, so that I have more time to work on each one, instead of rushing through many.

The Before

I decided to color one of the dragons to see what direction I want to take the rest of them.

The "Failed" Dragon

You may know from my previous post that I had a frustrating time with another dragon.

After around 3 hours of sketching I was so frustrated with no progress, I decided to give up. Luckily I tried one more time from a fresh start. After the first quick sketch I had the motivation to make many more.

The Process

I used mostly same process for all 3 dragons. The process is relatively simple: base color, shadow, light and texture. However, I spent a lot of time on cleaning up the outlines and experimenting with textures.

When I draw organic designs I use many circles, to create a basic construction. That way I can also concentrate on the overall flow using many curving lines.

Usually after I am done with the first sketch, I lower the layer's opacity and work on cleaning up the design on a new layer.

Steps1.jpg

Before cleaning up the outline, I decided where the light is coming from: often from the direction where the head is facing. This is important, because thicker line in the shadow areas makes the design more solid.

Some Variations

Layer adjustments are really fun as they are the fastest way to see a design in a "different light".

Thank you for reading! What is your favorite dragon?

I saw your post in the #postpromotion channel on the WhaleShares discord. Thank you for being with us! Amazing art krystyglas, they are very cute little dragons. Made me smile! :)

Thank you :D
Do you have a link of how the wheel works?
But yeah at 45% my vote would only be 0.01

Probably somewhere in my blog posts. The Wheel is still very new and is changing every day. :)

If you put your posts in the postpromotion tag in the WhaleShares discord it is possible that the Wheel will come again!

The horned one is the cutest :)

Thank you, really glad :D

Good luck! I really like these and the use of color.

Thank you! :)

Excellent work! Thanks for sharing the process as well!

Thank you :)
I like seeing art process, so I try to share mine too.

I like these a lot, perfect for children's literature....

Very adorable dragons! :D

Thank you! ^-^

So cute (as opposed to what I made). Love it! Very creative, love the coloring too. Love how each one is unique as well. Reminds me of the animated cartoon movie and series Dragons.

Thank you :)
Your Jaguar digital art is really great- nice animal robot blend and many details :D

You're too kind! I hope and aspire to become as good drawing digitally as you do. I'm self taught and only know old school pencil and paint. 🎨

Thank you, but I'm still far from being a pro xD
And I'm also self taught, my "fantasy" art skills are more advanced than painting sci-fi for example. I don't have enough time to learn everything, so I specialize for now :)

I completely understand. I enjoy experimenting and the learning process, since digital art was never taught in school (my son did, lucky guy) and didn't know how to go about it at the time in college (I couldn't really take up art, "it wouldn't pay the bills"). 👩🏻‍🎨

At least lucky son :D
They still don't teach digital art here, only graphic design like logos, or traditional art.
I was persuaded to go to Art Restoration(fixing art), because painting "doesn't pay bills" and according to some I was not "good enough" to even try Painting entrance exam ( I quit restoration after 2 years, 5 is minimum for diploma).
I should have maybe tried Animation department, as it is a bit more advanced, but still behind other countries. In the end all that matters is good portfolio not diploma :)
