Biarritz, France... Welcome to Part 2 of our recap discussing our collaboration with San Diego-based artist Raúl Guerrero. The collaboration consists of three t-shirts featuring artwork from a series of fictional travel posters he painted in 1988.
These paintings were based on references from his experiences living in #Oaxaca, #Biarritz, and #LosAngeles. The imagery is characterized by a touch of nostalgia, and evokes a slightly mythical energy, both common elements throughout Raúl’s impressive body of work.
Translating Raúl's vibrant paintings into screen prints resulted in t-shirts with tons of depth and character...

In 1987 while Raúl was traveling in southern France with his son, they stayed in the picturesque seaside town of Biarritz for several months. His son could often be found playing video games in the cafe below their apartment, as Raúl painted.

Biarritz is known for its iconic surf spots; topless beaches; and the historic Hotel du Palais, built by Napoleon III around 1855 as a summer villa for his wife Eugénie de Montijo, and later converted to a luxury hotel that has hosted stars such as Coco Chanel, Frank Sinatra, Ernest Hemingway, and Charlie Chaplin over the years.

In this piece, Raúl sought to capture the energy of Biarritz, and combine it with a reference to L’Odéon, the name of one of his favorite restaurants in Paris. The result is a beautifully mystical homage to his time in France.
