Remember that black and white photo challenge?

A bunch of my friends did this and got me to take part. The challenge demanded we do not offer any explanation for the images from everyday life. I took a couple photos everyday and then tried to see which one was most aesthetically pleasing when converted to black and white. I also tried to get somewhat of a focal point in the center and a lot going on around and behind it.

Tonight I scrolled through my black and white photos. It has been a while since I've seen them and I found myself remembering each of the days the photos came from. Since the challenge is over, I feel like I can explain my favorite photo.

This one was taken on my lunch break at work. I spotted the 5 gallon bucket used to catch metal saw shavings and scraps when I first started my shift. It sits on the floor and a conveyor belt attached to the saw spins every so often dropping the scraps into it. The saw operator usually empties it out once a day into the metal scrap dumpster 4 feet to the right.

It was about 3/4 of the way full when I started my shift. Even though I have not been operating the saw recently I was going to empty out the bucket. However, I got side tracked by my actual work.

A couple hours into my shift, the bucket caught my eye again. It was full and starting to form a little mound on top. I decided to let it keep going.

When it was lunch time, the bucket was as you see it in the picture. The saw operator works an overlapping shift with mine, and had gone home. Before dumping it out I decided to get a quick photo. It turned out to get the least amount of likes out of my 7 black and white photos on facebook. At the same time, it is my favorite one.
