Game of Thrones, Tyrion Lannister as a Pug.

I am back at my take on Game of Thrones characters as dogs. Having watched the season's finale last night, it was, as has been the case, fairly Tyrion heavy. This is fine with me, as he is one of my favourite characters.

Tyrion has the "underdog" quality that pulls us all in, but I like his intelligence mixed with self-interest. There is a quality to his character that feels the most rhuman and much like a fully realised person. His motivations are timeless and could be transported to today: greed, lust, search for love and sympathy, empathy, and a desire to both belong whilst still realising he will always be the odd man out. There is a relatable quality to him that makes you both root for him and also see yourself in him. You rarely feel sorry for him, which is in part due to the actor's abilities, as well as the that feeling of underdog in all of us; and yes the Pun was intended.

I had already done Tyrion as a Chihuahua. I have a chi of my own and though he is like Tyrion in stature and determination, he is probably more like Circe in quiet rage and cunning. I have known and had many pugs in my life, however, and they are very Tyrion. They snuffle about in a sort of comic way giving people the impression of the lovable bufoon, but the have a good-hearted quality to them that makes you root for them. "Sure, little Pug," you think, watching him sniffle and snort around the dirt, "This time maybe you won't eat a rock and it really WILL be a golden dog treat left by the Gods." We know it won't be, but we hope and prayer much as we do with our own foibles and flawed actions.
