"Sycamore" (watercolor)

in #art8 years ago (edited)

Looking up at this Sycamore tree against the intense Arizona sky, I took a reference photo and painted this full sheet (22"x30") watercolor in my studio.

But first I made this quarter sheet (11"x15") study....

I'm often torn between which ones I like best: the larger paintings or the studies I made for them. Both possess qualities that I like. The studies have a freshness and simplicity that appeals to me, while the full sheet pieces are more thought out and on a larger scale (4x larger) so have those aspects to consider.

Happily, I don't have to make up my mind at all. I can just enjoy both products of my labor.

Have a fabulous day today and every day my fellow Steemsters!

Both are quite lovely... for me, there's a freshness and spontaneity about the study that makes it marginally my favorite; it captures that "sharpness" of the southern sun.

Thank you @reddragonfly. I hear you.

I enjoy both but I see what you mean about the studies, it looks effortless!

@vermillionfox The smaller ones are "easier" to do, for lack of a better way of putting it, and are therefore sketchier. As an artist yourself, I'm sure you know what I mean. 😎

@chessmonster. 👌🏼Haha, got it.

Both are awesome, but I have to say I like the smaller study more. It has a bit more character and life to it.

@whistlejacket Thanks so much...I know what you mean. It's a question of personal taste, but I'm glad I did both for the reasons I outlined above. I appreciate the honest comment and feedback.
