One of my favorite comic book artists of all time is Adam Hughes. He is a master at what he does and has been doing it for over 30 years. His style is commonly referred to as “cheesecake style” amongst those in the industry and he carries a tremendous following as he’s one of the most well respected artists in the industry.

That’s why I was super pumped to fly him out to our shop for a signing in 2015. It was the week that our exclusive variants for Spider-Gwen #1 were released, and Adam did 3 versions for us. He actually came to the shop for a Wednesday night and Saturday signing. Our customers still talk about it to this day and it’s one of my proudest moments regarding my shop.

I’ll do a piece on that in the near future as I’ve been meaning to for a while. Lots to discuss on that but today, I’d like to just showcase a run that he did on the Catwoman series for DC Comics. I absolutely love this run and I get LOST looking at it!!!

He started covers on issue #44 which hit the stands in August of 2005 and finished the run on #82 which came out on October of 2008. Then a year and a half later in March of 2010, they released #83 to tie into the Blackest Night storyline. Adam did the cover for that one as well.

Quick side note...Adam also has one of the coolest signatures in the biz!!!

Anyway, today I’d just like to show off his entire complete coves from his Catwoman run. This run is highly coveted amongst collectors because they feature absolutely breathtaking works of art. It’s a fairly expensive run to put together nowadays as the “commons” of the run will still set ya back $6-$10 bucks a pop...while a large portion will be in the $12-$20 range. There are a few that will put a hurting on ya for $25-$40, while the crown jewel of the run in #51 will set ya back a full Benjamin!!!

What’s your thoughts? Do you have a favorite? Any guesses to win those tasty shares?!?

I had to do a quick check on the Google machine... but I seemed to recall some significance to the numbers in Catwoman’s mugshot. Turns out they’re an homage to the mystery numbers from the TV series Lost.

And if that’s not the fun trivia fact, my second guess is that you were just thinking, “Dayum... Catwoman is fine!”

And that 51 might be my favorite, it’s a classic for a reason! But 56 & 57 are close in the running. And Adam always rocks Zatanna... ah hell, I love them all! Let’s make that AH! Hell!

How cool are little "Easter Eggs" like that? Just a subtle tip of the hat. It's the reason I watch my daughter's Pixar movies multiple times over to see what I've missed.

*disclaimer, these movies may not all he hers....

I even gave the issue number away!!!! Lol

No need for justification, real men like Pixar! And I'm pretty sure 98% of all Easter Eggs arise from boredom. These works of art take so much time to make, the artists keep themselves deliriously entertained with the eggs!

Who cries at Most Pixar movies?!? This guy does!!!! (Points to self)

Pixar is the bomb. Love 99% of their stuff.

You got it brother!!! Congrats!!! Yeah the numbers in her mugshot are the numbers from Lost!!!

I put the clues in here as well. All in caps for the numbers and Lost. Just to help Incase folks were stumped.

Ha! I had to go back and spot your great Lost hint/pun there. I like what you did! It probably subliminally planted it in my mind to go looking that direction...

I’ll be buying your shares today!!!

Thanks man! Too kind & generous of you... but I’ll gladly take ‘em!

Lol. Fun!!!

I just had to dig out an old Sketch magazine, (#39 from 2009) to revisit an interview with Adam that always stuck with me. I was struck by how hard a critic he was on himself. It's always made me feel a bit better, because I know I might be my own harshest critic, which can be a good thing, as long as it's not paralyzing. Clearly it motivated Adam onward to his amazing career.

In the interview he describes how

my dissatisfaction with my own inabilities really makes me feel like a bush-league Van Gogh most days... all full of angst and ear-hate.

and that

I approach each job with a grand idea. Every step of the way I am frustrated by my inability to convey the Sistine Chapel I see in my head. In the end, my one true skill is the ability to white-out myself from the corners I've been painted into. I think my skill is the ability to make lemonade out of the lemons I come up with. People think "Wow! How did you come up with the idea for quiche!" and I go "I was actually trying to discover a cure for cancer..."

Both are great examples of Hughes' self deprecating sense of humor, and work ethic in striving for perfection. These gorgeous covers are the result!

That’s awesome that you save those and even remembered a specific interview. I think there should be a healthy balance of being critical so you can learn and grow, but also giving ones self praise for a job well done.

That’s totally awesome!!! I’m going to send him the link to this. I’m sure he’d appreciate that an aspiring comic creator in yourself looks to learn from a 10 year old interview he did.

That’s totally awesome Bryan.

Howdy today sir blewitt! yes sir it was one of my favorite shows ever! Such great acting and plot. And now we see those actors in all kinds of shows, several got their starts their like Kate and Hurley. lol. I think it was Kate. Anyway, to know those were the numbers from Lost you would REALLY have to be a geek! lol.
And yes the artwork is phenomenal!

His signature is amazingly cool! I love that he was at your shop. That must have been incredible.

You know how I feel about Adam Hughes. He is amazing. I will always remember when he came to Conquest Comics and spent his night drawing sketches and signing cover after cover and being a true gentleman and professional the whole time.
