Samurai Champloo || Mugen Fanart

in #art6 years ago (edited)

Hello AA! Here with another drawing, I felt like reverting back to traditional and decided to draw Mugen from Samurai Champloo. I love that series and I love this character. Let's get to it.

For anyone who just wants to see the result:

And now for the process...

Sketch:

I started by drawing a rough circular shape for the head, adding lines as a guide for the facial features as well as for what direction he will be looking in.

I then began to move down, sketching in his torso, drawing his clothes over the top as I went along, adding small details such as creases to the clothing as well as his collarbone.

Afterwards I began to draw his arms, his left arm hanging down by his side whilst his right arm held up as he holds his sword. I drew the outline of the sword and then began to fill in the details, saving me having to do so later on.

[C]I started to finish up the clothing, adding all the final details such as the strap and shirt underneath along with more creases and such.

Moving on, I began to shape the head somewhat, making his chin more sharper and his jaw more prominent. I then sketched his facial features, lining his eyebrows with his ears and then underneath, sketching his eyes narrow, looking onwards. I then added his nose and mouth along with his stubble and earring.

Using short, curved lines I sketched his hair, starting from the back of his neck and working my way to his fringe that I dragged up. I then added bits of hair hanging down the side of his face.

Lastly, I began sketching the background, starting with the trees that I sort of just scribbled in and the the mountains in the distance. I finished of with adding a stream of water below along with a sun descending.

Inking:

I then went over the entire sketch in ink, using a dip pen to clean up lines and add extra details to the background and such. When I erased the pencil I only lightly erased the trees as if be going over them in marker later.

Colouring:

Skin:

For the skin I used:
-Almond
-Blush
-Dusky Pink
-Praline

I used Blush as the base for the skin and began to layer over it using the darker tones listed, mostly around areas such as the neck, arms and the side of the face. I then used Dusky pink to colour over as the new visual colour.

Hair:

For the hair I just used a paintbrush and ink to fill it in along with the eyebrows.

Clothing:

For the shirt and the eyes I used Berry Red only to fill them in, as I didn't feel shading was too necessary as I would be going over it in white ink later. I used Turquoise for the strap and earring

I then used a warm grey to colour the shirt underneath and finished off by going over him with white ink, adding creases and strand lines to his hair amongst highlighting his skin and clothes.

Scenery:

Mountains:

For the mountains I used:
-Dusky Pink
-Praline
-Saddle Brown
-Burnt Sienna

I used Dusky pink as the base for the mountains, layering Praline in the cracks and amongst the lines that make up the texture of the rocks.

I then applied that sweet Saddle Brown and Burnt Sienna to create some extra tone and blended in using the Dusky Pink once again. I went over that in white ink like I did for Mugen.

Trees:

For the trees I used:
-Lush Green
-Pear Green
-Bright Green
-Lime Green

For leaves of the trees I used a dabbing effect with the markers, saving dots with the darkest tone which was Lush Green and gradually get lighter all the way to the Lime Green to which I proceeded to blend the colours in with. For the branches I used Praline and Burnt Sienna.

Sky

Dor the sky and the sun I used:
-Mandarin
-Amber
-Sunflower
-Yellow

I started with applying Mandarin at the bottom of the sun as well as the bottom of the sky and began to blend out gradually using the lighter tones, sunflower being used as the main visual colour.

River:

For the river I used:
-Denim Blue
-Azure

I coloured the entire river in Denim blue, not leaving any white lines as I would add that in a bit with the white ink. I then applied Azure along the rocks and wave lines, blending out with the Denim blue. Lastly I used the same colours as I did for the cliffs to colour the ground with.

I then added details to the rest of the drawing with the white ink on areas such as the trees and river as well as the sun.

And here it is finished:
